VR - I don't know why, but I remember you having a nice system - MCS (which was just re-branded Technics)
That was one of them. It's funny, back in those days stereo systems were all the rage...now we pop some earbuds in an IPhone or whatever and off we go. Man have times changed. I miss those days though...nothing like looking at the glow of a receiver and EQ at night. Fun memories!

MC...this is a pic of the Pioneer receiver I had at one point. I wish I had it today. I would set it up with a pair of speakers and use it as a show piece from the past. I loved that thing. If I could sneak it by the wife I would.

Fluster, have you fiddled around with/tried the solid acrylic platters? Do they help reduce any ambient noise, or are they just belt stretchers?
The U-Turn Orbit I had had the acrylic platter upgrade, but it came that way so I have no reference for comparison. I do tend to prefer some random dense plastic material like delrin or acrylic or even glass to metal platters. Mostly b/c I don't like using a mat if I don't have to. Low-end metal platters tend to "ring out" if you thump them and I have a PL-10 with a metal platter that will actually sing during playback if you don't use THE exact rubber mat it came with.

I've yet to find any of the newer tables that will work with my old Harmon-K tube receiver, they all sound like crap through it. It's early 60's The vintage Garrard table does fine with it though. Unfortunately, the mechanics are kind of jacked up right now, so I'm going to try and break it down and work out the kinks over the winter.
Have you tried using an external phono preamp thru a line input? Some of the old receivers have really strange MM input biases/capacitances that just won't jive with anything it wasn't sold or paired with.

Reviews I see online are REALLY mixed for almost everything. My son is getting a ton of music related items: amp, bass, guitar, etc but does want a turntable. I’m looking to not break the bank but am seeing a lot to be concerned about for just about every review I read
Not much to add — just make sure you get a googlephonic speaker arrangement and a moon-rock needle.

I think this one only does like 25W/channel. But, it has working VU meters and offers a really nice tactile feel of heavy switches. Was sitting abandoned in the repair shop I use in Eville several years ago. I think I paid like $150 for the set.

I like my turntable -- an Orbit Plus made by U-Turn Audio in Massachusetts. Built-in preamp. Ordered an upgraded Ortofon cartridge.
