Two 4-star visitors on campus Thursday
Even before one of the biggest recruiting weekends on campus begins, Nebraska hosted a pair of 4-star prospects for unofficial visits Thursday, linebacker Daniel Heimuli and tackle Danielson Ike.
Heimuli landed his Nebraska offer less than one month ago. The Menlo Park, Calif., native has been busy the last week, checking out several schools. He camped at Ole Miss on June 9, then picked up an Alabama offer two days later during an unofficial visit with the Tide. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound prospect then moved on to the Midwest, visiting Illinois and Iowa State before stopping by Lincoln on Thursday.
LSU, Oregon, UCLA and USC have all entered the competition for Heimuli, who holds 24 offers total. According to the 247Sports composite, the Polynesian Bowl commit is the 12th-ranked inside linebacker and No. 330 overall prospect in the class. He is the 41st-ranked player in California.
Heimuli’s presence on campus is particularly interesting given the position he plays. Nebraska took a commitment last week from 3-star recruit Jackson Hannah to fill a spot in the unit. Commit Garrett Snodgrass, a 3-star athlete, also figures to play that position in college. And with the Huskers chasing top Omaha Burke priority Nick Henrich, who plays inside linebacker, it’s getting crowded on their board.
As with Hannah’s commitment, this likely means Nebraska wants to make sure it has its bases covered at the position if the Huskers are unsuccessful in landing Henrich.
Meanwhile, this is the second time in slightly more than two months Ike has made it to Lincoln; he also visited for one of the junior days in April. The 6-6, 300-pound prospect attends Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, meaning he is a priority regional recruit. The return visit signals interest on his side.
Rockhurst coach Tony Severino told Land of 10 following Ike’s first visit that there were academic hurdles he needed to clear, since he is a Nigerian immigrant and has moved from Miami to Kansas City. (Miami holds the only 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction for Ike.)
“Any place would be a good fit for him, trust me,” Severino said. “He’s exactly what most offensive line coaches are looking for. Big, physical, athletic offensive lineman. You wouldn’t know he’s 16 years old by looking at him. He’d fit right in to about any system you can get into. He’s just learning the game. He’s getting better and better every game he plays.”
Ike is the No. 30 tackle and No. 279 prospect in the class. The Huskers are in the market for approximately three tackles this cycle.
“He’s just got so much natural strength and size and ability,” Severino said. “He’s got some God-given talent.”

Logan Smothers, a 3-star quarterback in the 2020 class, took an unofficial visit with Nebraska on Wednesday. The Huskers locked up their quarterback for 2019 with Luke McCaffrey’s commitment last week, but could they be close to doing the same for 2020?
It’s unlikely Nebraska will want to move that quickly, but it’s possible the program could take a commitment from the right target. I’m sure that, in the meantime, the coaches would encourage Smothers to take time with his decision. It doesn’t look like anything is imminent from him, anyway.
