I see on Twitter athletes who state they receive offers from schools that do not give scholarships for football. Are they just saying the school has a spot for them on the roster? Secondly, I see other states where kids are given a state ranking on Rivals but it seems like we are only going to rank the top 5 per position. If they are in the top 225 will they have a ranking number?

Always interesting to see the retweet of a kid who was "blessed" receive an offer from Valpo and the like.

My question is, if kids aren't at camps, and are Soph's or froshies, how are they getting offers?

It's all about having varsity film.
If you don't have varsity film, then you must do camps/combines.
If you don't have varsity film and you don't do any camps/combines, you are invisible.

I think the exception to this is The Ivy's - you actually get a letter from the coach stating they will sponsor your admission to the university- it's not a financial offer and they only "sponsor" about 20 kids a year but not all sponsored kids make it past the university president

I've heard many things about the rivals and other alike. If you don't have an offer you don't get a star or ranking. It's like film don't matter in their ranking process. I just wonder what about the kids who can't travel to the Rival Camp Series but send film out to them, why can't that be evaluated and graded based on that. Just wondering why evaluating isn't happening anymore.

I recently heard a coach say I send out almost 100 twitter offer but the ones who I hand wrote or call personally are my 1st option. He said it's sad but it's the game and I was like wow reality check.

I have heard some of those same things but there are a few people that try to evaluate honestly and I have 2 boys who I thought should have stars but they don't. They thought they wasn't working hard enough and it consumed them. I do think the machine needs adjusting the edgy has always leant me his ear when needed.

Wow alot to cover here.

1. The whole Ivy offer deal has been a ball of confusion for all services. True, they don't offer athletic monies (also true for several but not all Patriot League schools...adding even more confusion) but they also play at the FCS level which does in general offer athletic money. So my take? From here on out if a kid adds an Ivy roster spot offer or a Patriot league offer....I'll add it as an offer. Again this is still not a clear cut rule at Rivals but for me this is how I will handle it. Just had this conversation a few days ago actually.

2. Rivals always has a state ranking and I contribute heavily towards that but Josh Helmholdt our Midwest guy has the final word. The link is the Top 20 Class of 2017 State of Illinois rankings from late February and will be updated and expanded soon. Also as far as the Top 5 deal that's my site only and I will also have a Top 30-40 soon. The Top 5 is to be considered a teaser and even if a kid is named in the Top 5 per position it does NOT mean they will be in the Top 30-40 etc.

3. Film absolutely matters. And kids getting offered as freshman and sophs (another whole discussion) have seen the varsity level and have film and in many cases have been personally evaluated by college coaches. I also try to see as many kids in person as possible before making an evaluation. I'm also one of the only in-state evaluators for Illinois who lives in Illinois FYI.

4. As far as getting ranked and having "offers" it's not a requirement...but I also won't pretend that it's not a factor because it is. Then again why would a college "offer" a kid unless they feel that same kid is a better overall recruit than a kid not offered? Again for me one of the most overrated parts of this industry is the star ranking and parents and coaches weight way too much into it and it just gets worse every year. I actually like how Rivals handles it compared to others...we don't "rank" everyone and I hope we never do that again unlike in the past.

5. As someone who has made it my mission to find as many kids worthy kids who could play at the next level over these past 20 plus years...I get a bit bothered by the "invisible" comment. I look at as many kids as possible all year long. Unfortunately in this era between the all season long hype men and services, AAU coaches, insane parents and more...parents and kids just don't want to hear no. I'm never going to "find them all" but God knows I try my best. I also list my full recruiting list on the EDGY Nation side which includes nearly 300 kids in 2017 and another 100-150 in 2018/19 and those are expanded daily. No one that I'm aware of makes those lists available to the public.

Also as far as the Twitter offers most are legit but some are crap....and I also feel I go above and beyond compared to others and in many cases have the ability to "backcheck" those offers. Again I'm not perfect not even close....but I try. The same can be said of every other person in this industry.

Edgy: Just to clarify, when I said "invisible", I meant invisible to college coaches, not invisible to you.

Edgy, that was great information. I initially joined this site because my kid's coach said there was good info here and that it is good for our school to have a presence on the board, and he was right. Not to be a kiss A$$ but I've been impressed since day 1 and enjoy the tweets and info I get from this site. You have a fun job, but you have a very difficult job dealing with sometimes delusional and overbearing coaches and parents I imagine. Illinois has its problems, but when it comes to high school football, wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Ok, so saying your son has varsity film, and let's even say for instance, he's a young man like Houston, who is a starter.

I know and everyone knows he's a Sophomore. I thought NCAA rules stated no coaches were permitted to contact a player until Junior year, unless they were on campus at a camp, junior day, etc. so how are these schools offering kids prior to Junior year?

Not trying to call anyone out. My son has played on a few national teams with Houston, and he's a good kid. I just used his name as an example.

Almost exclusively through 1 or both of these 2 methods:
1. Twitter direct messages (DM's).
2. College coaches contact the high school coach and tell high school coach to have player call college coach at college coach's cell #.
