(Cue the echo) Hel-lo-lo-lo. Is anybody in there-there-there-there?

It's not a Pink Floyd song. It's NU's recruiting. This is killing me!! Has anybody seen anything? I just did a relatively thorough search and I don't see spit ... nada ... nothing.

A few cheap thoughts. Nothing of any consequence.

1) Geez, I hope the obvious isn't happening. I hoping f-ing Bamisile's decision isn't having that kind of effect.
2) I think it's just as likely that there was another Bamisile effect. The staff is really shutting down communication about recruiting. We saw signs of it last year - and now this. It's too easy to poach from NU, and the staff may shut down communication.
3) If the obvious is happening, it's not a good sign for Collins. But the turnover in staff can not be helpful.
4) Is there any chance they have a couple commitments, and the group is being run through the NU admissions gauntlet? That's probably not a great sign either.
5) I think the most realistic hope is that they are in good shape with a recruit or two, and football-game official visits will seal the deal.
6) I always wonder if this September dead period on campus is part of the traditional problem. While nobody is on campus and the engine is just starting to rev up at NU, official visits are taken all over the country to lively campuses with great atmospheres. Then, here comes NU in the middle of September after three or four weeks of official visits like the little brother trying to catch up from behind. "Wait for me, guys!!"
7) The other thing that kills me is that I see quite a bit about Stanford. NU-target Max Murrell committed there in the last couple days. Ryan Kalkbrenner has visited. And they've had a pretty active visit calendar. Damn.
8) My recruiting dream? Adam Miller and Kalkbrenner are teammates. Miller has two official visits still remaining. Maaaaaaaybe they are ... IT COULD HAPPEN ... OK, OK, I know. I'll stop. I'm sure the Irvins have already received several FedEx packages from Champaign.

I could use a little hope. My sports September has started off horribly between the Stanford game, the Bears and the dying Cubs.

9) Another dream - Luke Goode visits this weekend and decides to commit to NU. Why the hell not?? Screw #WeCantHaveNiceThings :D

So next year 4 spots open....only 4 offers out according to Verbal Commits.....the following year 5 spots open and only 7 offers out and that includes two kids, (Christie and Baldwin jr) who have major, major offers. My thoughts are that after a pretty poor season and a mass exodus we are easy pray to nay saying , slamming and attack so they are keeping everything close to the vest.

A lot of coaches are on the road at high school open gyms. Don't know about 2020, but NU was in Michigan yesterday looking at Julian Roper, a 2021 6-3 shooting guard at Orchard Lake St. Mary's with offers from Iowa and Wisconsin, and Pierre Brooks, a 2021 6-5 shooting guard they had already offered.

Doesn't seem logical to me. You know kids get offers when kids tweet it. It's almost impossible for schools to keep a lid on offers. Something else is going on here -- either NU can't find enough Big Ten worthy prospects who also meet academic requirements, or they not getting a great reception from prospects upon initial contact.

There's plenty of time. When I look at the recruits the past three years, they are so much better than previously. I suspect we'll get more good ones this year. I'm fine with Collins being secretive; nothing is gained from publicizing who he's working on. He's been successful to date - let's see how it ends up.

Right now if there were no other recruits for the high school class of 2020 we would have nine players under scholarship. I would think they will take two in the class of 2020, probably a big man and another point guard possibly the kid from Kansas. That would leave 3 spots open for the 2021 group.

Here are our commits vs. offers since Collins and his staff began recruiting, per 247

2014: 5/19
2015: 3/10
2016: 3/16
2017: 1/18
2018: 4/17 (should have been 3/17 but we reclassified a 19)
2019: 3/21
2020: ?/12 (five of those 12 have yet to commit anywhere)
2021: ?/6 (none have committed anywhere)

So, if our historical CC averages hold, we can expect about 5 more offers or so for 2020 and 11 more offers or thereabouts for 2021. And throwing out 2017, when I believe we had only one schollie to offer (someone correct me if I am wrong), looks like we can expect to cover all of the open schollies in the next two years based on our historic average hit rate under CC.... And, of course none of this counts transfers, and we already have one of those for 2020, and should expect more in the current climate.

2017 was the year where Collins was recruiting to have a player play their first year at Allstate with no practice facility for at least a year plus. Gaines is a hero.

These historical numbers are a good reference, but without dates, I don't think they give a full picture. What were the numbers in mid-September for their senior years? How many offers, and how many commits? Do you have those numbers? I'm usually a glass-half-full guy, but with no commits and all the recent stories being about 2021 recruits, I'm getting concerned that 2020 may be a lost year for recruiting.

From the outside, I also wonder if there's a relationship between 2020 and seemingly the concentration on 2021. The angel on my shoulder says they have a plan for 2020 that we'll see in the next several weeks - the upcoming official visit that close the deals. The devil on my shoulder agrees with you.

LoyolaCat's idea that there should only be two recruits this year isnt ridiculous at all. That would even things out. And all this group "needs" is another big man and a point guard. The group on campus now is how Collins will either sink or swim.

Dates are misleading, as the recruiting timeline evolves each year. Fewer and fewer kids sign in the early fall period each year. Recruitments go into the spring far more often than ever before. Transfers have completely changed the way teams assemble rosters as well, and that’s had a knock on effect in HS recruiting. Heck, a decade ago you’d see HS sophomores committing. Now, seniors often opt to not even sign an LOI to keep their options open in case of a coaching change or scandal.

This is interesting. I was unaware of this. Football is moving in the opposite direction. I hope it means Collins has a shot at some later-committing 2020s.

I think we had at least one more available in 2017

Following recruiting in D1 is like banging your head on the wall. No reason to concern myself with it until the season starts and I can look at the roster to see who we have. There’s just no point in investing time in 20 different recruits, where, if we’re lucky, one or two will wear an NU jersey at some point. If we’re more lucky, one might even see meaningful court time. I’ll let Collins do the worrying. I just get to watch and root for whomever wears purple.

Yeah, don't know, thought people were complaining around here back then that we couldn't take another persion since Vassar was taking up the final slot, but don't know for certain...

yes. its possible that NU only takes one prospect in 2020 to set up for a big 2021

Sure, now that a big 2020 seems off the table. Kicking the can down the road.
Bam's decommitt had a large part in that, and not much that could have been done about that once the kid wanted to be closer to home due to a personal issue...

Let’s see, two unused schollies, one sitting out, one Lax player, two injured guys and one guy a year younger than his natural class.

Next year, none coming in, add two more open schollies to the list and prayers that no one else leaves cuz playing w nine scholarship players already sucks.

We didn’t need some big guy ranked in the top 200 cuz, well, we have nine other guys to play.

We'll see where we are when the games are played. I predicted an improved record this year, and I predict ones for 2020 and 2021 as well. Because I actually trust that we have the right management in place, just as I did with Fitz and Dr, Jim in 2013-2014. The road to systematic improvement always has bumps in it...
