This is the whole case in a nutshell, he did what he had to do. He was/would have been a much better college player than he ever will be as a pro. Get the money while you can
Another year of college where he only shoots 37% from three and he wouldn’t get drafted. He absolutely made the right choice. He could live on interest from his rookie deal FOR LIFE. Hell, for his children’s lives.
Not to mention the NIL money shep would have gotten too . Appears to be a bad decision we shall see . Nice post
I think UK ought to be able to serve as a landing spot in such situations. I mean NCAA basketball is essentially minor league professional basketball now, anyway. We have a PG on the disabled list right now, and we could use Reed in our rotation over the next 3 months.
I think it’s a good move, he needs minutes and they aren’t giving him any as they are too good. They aren’t ahead of schedule. It’s gonna take a couple years if they stick with him to get him some time.

But he will in the G league? I hope the young man saves every penny of that. I'm just saying that sometimes another year or two at the collegiate level where they can mature physically and especially mentally, may pay off in a longer and even more lucrative career.
His father, Jeff, is a financial advisor. I mean talk about a great job for your dad to have. If invested properly, with conservative returns of 8% he’ll be worth well north of 100 million dollars by the time he’s 40 getting a start at such a young age without earning another cent. That is generational wealth. I mean who TF is turning that down? And it’s not like he’s turning down being a massage therapist to be a coal miner - he’s getting that money to simply keep playing basketball and not have to go to class anymore. I mean no one here would turn that down.

It’s better than riding the bench full time, yes. He has a contract. He’s getting paid NBA money regardless. Better to actually get on the court.
Pj Washington wouldn’t have gotten drafted if he left after his 1st year. It was the obvious choice to come back.
He’s got 3 years. If he can’t prove it by then he was probably never sticking around.
Risking a lot of money to maybe not get beaten disappointingly again in the tournament? Yeah, I’d say that’s silly.
demotions are not a good thing , he had to go, but gonna have to play on the small stage for a while . He will never be a star in the league , more like a 2nd round pick .

Reed could score zero NBA points the rest of his career and fail to nab a second contract in the league and it still wouldn’t be a failure in my eyes. With the top 3 draft selection, he made significantly more money than I will likely ever make in my lifetime and did it before being old enough to legally drink alcohol. Love UK and wish he would have returned but it wasn’t wrong for him to go when he did
Exactly why he made the right choice. He was never getting that high ever again. I cant believe some uk fans (not you necessarily) still claim he made a mistake.
Did it help the Harrisons to come back to school? Sometimes guys just are what they are. Any physical maturing he can do at UK he can do better inside an NBA organization. He was 3rd pick, the Rockets are going to give him every resource he needs to improve. Much more than he would have gotten with another year here.
No second contract was guaranteed no matter how many years he played here. Truth is he's somewhat limited physically and returning for a second year doesn't change that. To whatever extent he came improve things like his quickness, he can do it under the supervision of world class trainers at the NBA level more so than he ever could at UK.
His choices were go after a year in a generationally weak draft and sign a $45 million contract and set himself and his kids up for life or take a huge gamble and return, need to fight his way up the draft board in a much improved draft class, take a lesser first contract, and hope that second year somehow reinvented him as a player so the second contract was closer to a guarantee.
Betting on yourself can be a good thing sometimes, but there were way too many things stacked against him for it to be a good move in this case.
After 15 years of one and done guys, many UK fans still don't understand the whole dynamic behind the draft, why guys leave early, and why teams draft potential.
Absolutely made the right decision. There’s been several NBA all-stars that started out in the G-League.

The G-league is by no means some death sentence like people think it is. Plenty of 1st round picks and even lottery picks spend stints in the G-league.
Plus Houston is backed up. They honestly were toying with trading this pick all together, not because they didn't want Reed or anything, but simply because they have just too much young talent in the mix, especially at the guard spots.
This move was simply to give Reed some valuable minutes, that he wasnt going to get on Houston right now. With the added benefit of playing a lesser level of competition. This could very well be a 1 step back, 2 steps forward kind of move

Yes but he would actually get developed, at Houston he is playing and won’t get help delevoping his game.
Maybe if ncaa is allowing pro European and Israeli players to play in college Reed could come face for a year or two. He already has the money and he could learn as much here as the G league
G league is better prep for the NBA than college basketball. I'm not sure how you do not know this.

I wanted to see Reed come back this year as well but he would have lost millions by doing so his draft stock had no place to go but down
