Reed playing his first preseason game tonight. Looks decent so far. Through 14 minutes he has 10pts, 2 of 4 3pt shooting 3 rebounds and an assist. This line might not look spectacular, but hes starting in a game that pretty much has everyone playing.

Pivotal season for him. With FVV out all season, this is the time to step up.

I know many on this site ridicule his defense but he had a knack for a deflection on the backside and could go into the lane and get defensive rebounds.
He can’t guard on the ball. You can’t leave your man in the NBA to play the passing lanes.

He’s going to have to do other things at an elite level to stay on the floor.

Can he do that?

Im not too worried about his defense just yet. That can be a work in progress.. the bigger issue is, can he provide offense for his team(for which he was primarily drafted for)? .. or is does his lack of elite athleticism and lack of confidence make the NBA just too difficult of a league to stay in. He can let some defenders go by, but if he cant hit 3s and facilitate offense as a fill in for FVV, than none of this matters and he will be out of the league in a few years.

im not. there will never be an excuse for him to come out of that tunnel in arkansas gear unless he lost a bet.
I mean there are some things where in the heat of the moment you think are ridiculous but then when you think about it over time you kind of get it and it’s not really a thing. But a former Kentucky player coming out 6 months after leaving wearing an Arkansas shirt when they were playing Kentucky might be one of the most asinine things I can think of 😂 I mean what in the world was he thinking? What can insane thing to do.

He is a better than average athlete, he’s no slouch. Definitely good enough for the league.

As much as I want it to be true because im a fan of UK, his, AND Houston.. im still a little worried. And remember, thr NBA isnt average athletes, they are all elite athletes (aside from Joker lol). And thats really the fear. Like a Jimmer Fredette, we know he has the capabilities to dominate in any non-NBA league.. but that added size, length and speed makes things very difficult.

The good thing is, we have seen some extremely crafty play from him during his year at UK. Lots of heady defensive plays and ability to put up 12 points in a matter of minutes. That will go a long way. So I still have a lot of faith. But this is a very pivotal year

Jimmer makes Reed look like a decathlete.

Reed is a great athlete. But he lack basketball lateral movement. Can he get better? Absolutely.
Look at Steph. He’s not a great defender by any means but he’s leaps and bounds better than when he got drafted.

And he’s not the athlete that Reed is. But Steph had the talent elsewhere that he had to play.

Reed will never be the shooter and passer that Steph is. But his defensive hill is not as tall.

Reed is a "great" athlete compared to the guys on this board. He is nowhere near a great athlete compared to other NBA players, unless you're talking Joker or Luka

He looks much more comfortable and ready in the summer league/ pre season this year.

Reed had the highest maximum vertical at the combine at 42 inches. That is way more than enough athleticism to be good in the league. He is almost 6’2” without shoes. He has plenty of speed and jumping ability to make it in the league. No NBA team on the planet would consider drafting a guard who didn’t have the athleticism to succeed in the league 3rd overall.

Compared to normal people they are. Not compared to other NBA players mate. Average to below. Ja Morant, Antman, Gianni, Zion...not even close to great
Those are the absolute best athletes in the league. Reed is slightly above average in league athleticism especially jumping.

Reed was always going to take time to develop and this is his year to do that. Usually star rookies get run on bad teams and that wasn't the case for Reed and he went to a decent team in the Rockets.

He will need to be able to provide offense, rebounds and turnovers to stay on the floor.

Our fanbase gets triggered by the goofiest things. Players aren't allowed to show support for their coach and school apparently.

We also have fans who actually thought taking 45 million was the wrong thing to do. As if their broke butts wouldn't have done the same at that age.

None of that is true at all - just over the top hyperbole that totally invents a narrative. Almost no one said it was the wrong thing to do - it’s been almost universally said in this thread nobody blames him for taking the money and not passing up being a lottery pick. No one has an issue with him supporting Cal - here wore another school’s (an SEC rival BTW) shirt when we were playing them, that he didn’t even go to. That’s such a weird thing to do.

If you say so man. IMO, there is a lot more to athleticism than a good vertical. If he has elite quickness and speed as you say, why can he not guard a fire hydrant? Teams also dont draft kids 3rd overall to ride the pine. Giving an honest opinion on a kid is not hating

He was also wearing UK gear on that fated day. Some of you seem to forget that.

Also, the obsession with hating Reed for it makes many of you folks look small, not Reed.

Look it was a bad look. Very bad look. And it does matter, this is not a typical organization and program. It’s legendary and known as being one of the greatest traditions and fanbases in ALL of sports. In ALL of sports. As a royal family in the bluegrass you just don’t do that. Period. You were not going to see many at all do it because it’s a legacy killer. Wall, even cousins who was angry about the move, wouldn’t dare do it, and wall came here ONLY because of Calipari. He still will not do it. Because he knows this is where he’s ultimately famous for life. This is where he’ll be known forever. This is his natural and true sports home and it’s connected to a highly recognizable program and organization.

Reed was part of a royal family and fans and children came out in droves to support him. He was treated far better than he gave. And to come out wearing ANOTHER RIVAL PROGRAMS gear is highly disrespectful and tasteless. It shows he absolutely doesn’t get it.

Reed is also, obviously, young in the mind. It’s obvious what happened there he was wearing the same shirt as PJ Washington. Wagner and that crew sent that to him and wanted him to wear it because they wanted to get a rise out of the fans. They know how much Reed meant to the fans. What Reed probably doesn’t know is they did part of it to hurt him here because, I’m sure, there was a lot of jealousy around him while they were at UK, and he went pro and got a top pick before them. If people don’t think Wagner was jealous of Reed, not sure what planet you live on. Reed in 6 months got what Wagner was billed as for 3/4 years. Reed was duped by those guys I’ll believe that until I die.

Long story long, Reed was stupid. He also made his parents look bad which was crappy. But I really don’t think Reed understands his situation and I don’t think he ever did. We’ll see what happens from here on out, I’m sure in the future he’s going to back away from it and explain he’s only Kentucky. I think Jeff and that family are backing away from the whole thing until Calipari leaves Arkansas. Then they’ll say it was nothing and they care nothing about Arkansas.

Calipari on the other hand, to allow and encourage his former players to destroy their legacies here, shows how little he gives a **** about them. He was always a con man and still is, that’ll never change.

This board more than anywhere else. There's a reason people refer to "raftards." There are plenty of folks I like here, but to be honest the utter dregs of our fan base hang out here. Over the past several years back at rivals, the general atmosphere of Rupp Rafters got dumber, more confrontational, and more toxic. It's not like this in other spaces like at WCN or on Reddit.

This is embarrassing. That long of a post explaining your conspiracy why Reed wore an Arkansas shirt. Reed literally was trying to show love to Coach Cal, Adou, DJ, and Z and also UK at the same time. Nothing more nothing less. Sure he could have tried something else , but who'd think grown ups would get upset over a shirt.
