Refs are killing us! Give me a break!

I came to this board thinking "I'm not going to start a thread about how bad the refs were tonight"... but since you already started one...

They were terrible tonight, and biased against NU. At one stretch in the first half they called traveling or double dribble on 4 out of 7 NU offensive possessions. All of them were borderline. Iowa did the exact same jump stop and pivot foot move, multiple times, zero traveling calls on Iowa.

For years McCaffery screamed at Big Ten refs, called them "Cheating Motherf*ckers" in the tunnels after games... and it has paid off. They seem scared of him, or at least they favor him. Garza constantly hooks with his off hand, nothing. Never a three-second violation

They T'd up Nance for (rightfully) showing a tiny bit of frustration after he had a 100% clean block called as a foul. And Nance never jaws at the refs. That was ridiculous.

Iowa was called for 5 fewer fouls, Garza 1 foul! Iowa shot twice as many FTs. Refs were simply atrocious tonight. After a few games of getting some B10 officials that were actually impartial, it was back to the same ol, same ol tonight.

Also Garza traveled several times with no call.
Garza doesn’t get called for anything. He bull rushes guys and draws suspect fouls whereas they never call him lowering the shoulder to clear out. Good to see we can compete though and would have liked a little help from the zebras.

Even if every call was “fair” we would have lost anyway. Shooting like they did tonight they will win most of the time, especially with turnovers at inopportune times.

Buie's poor shooting was a killer. His shots didn't even come close. A bad game for him all-around, but hey, that's gonna happen. Refs didn't help us, but didn't cost us the game. Great shooting by Bohannon did us in.

The refs can be biased for the home clubs in the B1G, and it surprises me how much that has held to form even without the big home crowds. But let's not become one of those fan bases that's constantly bitching about being screwed by the refs (and there are several of those in the B1G). And yes, Garza gets the benefit of All-American calls, just as Jordan used to get away with murder in the NBA.

Justified or not, the technical on Nance started Iowa's breakout in what had been a close game. And Bohannon picked a hell of a time to come out of his season-long shooting slump. Nance had a nice all-around game, but we were trading his two-point elbow jumpers for Iowa's threes at the end, and that math doesn't work. NU needs Buie, one of its few creators, to be at his best against the top teams. He largely disappeared during the final eight minutes. And Audige is still erratic. I don't think he's fully adjusted to the B1G yet.

Hey, who thought we'd be off to a 3-1 start in this league? And we appear to have a team who can compete with anyone on a given night. Let's hope the engine will continue to run on all cylinders.

Shooting was about the same. They beat us by 15 and 11 of those points were at the line. Both teams had the same 11 3 pointers and they had about 2 more baskets overall. And if they called the same way on turnovers (traveling) we would have had several more possessions or they would had several fewer or both. In any event, while it might not have changed the outcome, it would have been far closer

At least people are starting to take notice nationally of how bad the officiating was in that game:

He said it in machine language? Cool.....
No idea why it copied over like that. It's the Reddit thread from the main College Basketball Forum. Interesting note is that McCafferty (the player) said the same exact thing Nance did in the first half and did not get called for a T.

Check out the last two possessions in regulation for PSU at IU and you will see some more home favoring refereeing

IU needed all the help they could get in that one. They blew a late double digit lead in regulation but held on to win in OT.

In other games, Ohio State beat Nebraska by 36 points. Why do we get only one game against the Huskers this season? 😦

After watching NU hoops for 35 plus years, I am sick and tired of three things: 1) complaining about announcers 2) complaining about refs 3) losing. I also hate talking about “Next Year.”

This team has the players to win now and to overcome bad reffing and announcing. We will win 10 games in the loaded B1G THIS YEAR.

Go Cats!
