I totally agree! I think that the refs this year have been outstanding.

PAY THEM MORE!

These is no reason in the world that a scoreboard operator, scorer or game announcer makes more money than the game officials. But it happens every week at venues all over the state.

We need more officials. And we need great officials. And the paltry sum that they are paid compared to other workers is embarrassing and just plain wrong.

Agreed. Only problem is some districts have more money to pay officials than others. Will continue to be an issue until they can bump it up state wide.

Sorry. I have little sympathy for them.

Those districts have no trouble paying their pople to work at timers, announcers, etc. At rates much higher than game officials.

These are the guys who really work during the games and take crap from everyone. When was the last time your heard someone swear at a clock operator other than Maine South.

I've had parents coming up to me wanting to "speak with the announcer" who were none too happy, but I understand your example. I'm not asking for sympathy for anyone, I was just stating that some districts are more strapped for cash than others. For example, there's a district I've worked for where you get $45 between the two games for working. From what I remember when I used to ump (granted it was a different sport), ref pay is higher than that usually isn't it? I could very well be wrong on that though.

We definitely agree on a pay increase for refs though. Especially if that comes with a superior product.

Not all announcers, chain crew etc. get more then the refs. But if they are school employees, teachers they make a lot more than we do on a Friday night.
One of the reasons for the shortage of officials (along with a few more) is the low pay for the abuse. In the state of Illinois 80% of officials leave before 5 years. If this trend continues, games will be cancelled.
Some conferences will have to move the soph/JV will be moved from Friday nights. That way the officials we do have will be able to work on another night to work them One of the big reasons schools have moved frosh games to Thursday, easier to get officials
