First Hatcher, now Meant. If we have a good D line this year, I will personally nominate Stoops, Elliot and Brumbaugh for co coach of the year.

Losing Hatcher and Meant is huge.....I guess this is why you need so much depth in the SEC. There will always be losses like this, but we cannot afford them like other SEC teams that have more depth.

Hatcher would have been a star this season and playing in the NFL afterwards if he could have kept his head straight. He had NFL ability.

Ya know I wouldn't laugh too much about that, from what I've read and watched Saturday he was second team but you never hear anything about it which makes me wonder about when the depth chart was updated he went from third team to second pretty quick. Larry might be onto something JMO
Firios was ill Saturday.

I'll try to explain: When #2 can't practice, #3 becomes #2 for the day.

Ok looks like this sailed over your head, again how or why did KD move to second team in almost less than a week when the updated depth chart came out ? A Durrrrr

Here & OT are the two places there isn't a BUNCH of talent. OTOH, we do have Bunchy.
Somehow i think we still make a bowl game. We have miggins bell dubose daniels middleton that have been in this system multiple years. I said losing Meant hurts but it is definetly not as bleak as some are making it. I happen to like the talent of the players listed above mixed with the new frosh. and believe with Elam and Love up the middle will hold there own against the 9 teams we have legit shots to beat.

Kids like Snodgrass, Hendrix, Hytche, etc.. we can more easily replace. But when a Hatcher, Tubman, Meant, etc..those DL losses are so hard for UK to replace. Plus you play at least 2 or 3 kids every game at those DL spots...but don't rotate other positions on football field as much.

Teams are going to try run it right at our DT and DE spots and see if they can take advantage of that known question marks each game. With the number of run first teams on UK schedules...Brumbaugh and Elliott are going to have their work cut out.

Regardless of the circumstances, it is next man up. The D-Line and the Linebackers, have to grow and grow in a hurry this season.

I don't know what the Orlando rumor is but I heard PEDs. May not be true. Hope it's not and hope he has success.

Someone said they move/put Freshman up the depth chart (let them work with 2nd team, etc.) early on to get a look to see if they are worth playing this year. I don't know, I heard he's a possible redshirt. I'm excited about him and his work ethic, attitude, leadership, etc. That said, he played against extremely poor competition in high school so it's hard to tell just how good he is. Is he ready to play SEC football? Cause it's a far cry from the athletes he faced in E. KY. Does he even understand the defense enough to be out on the field without blowing assignments and costing us? He needs some time. I don't think a kid from Paintsville as a true freshman is our SEC savior.

Either way, he's not even the same position as Meant, so Larry's post is silly, hence me laughing. We need defensive linemen.

Maybe, but Stoops said it had nothing to do with football and PEDs certainly would. If it is true, maybe the rumor from earlier in the summer had legs. Or maybe what you heard is leftover from that material.

If it truly has nothing to do with football and is a personal issue, the first thing that came to mind was a terminal diagnosis given to a close family member. No inside info and of course I hope it is not something so grim. But you could understand him stepping away from the game to be near family during a situation like that.

The same people who are saying that Meant hasn't really made an impact in his 2 years here are now the same people saying this is a huge loss.

Make up your mind.

Yeah. Now that he is out, I realize how good he was last year.

Valid points all of them . But he sure looked good during the all American game and defense team captain........

Just sayin, but how does anyone explain the quick jump from 3 -2 ? Doesn't sound like a whole lot of confidence in Frios to me
I've heard stoops say it a few times. The freshmen that might be able to play are gonna get thrown out there and see if they can swim. Every freshman that shows potential will get 2nd string snaps. If they do well they'll get 1st string snaps and then let them actually compete for the spot and get in where they fit in.

So all you 7/8 win people, tame your expectations. You guys get hyped every year and then injuries happen and lack of depth shows! I'm remaining cautiously optimistic, but this is a huge blow, and it irritates the hell out of me when some of you dismiss it as no big deal. IT'S A BIG DEAL to lose a starter at a position where we are already weak and lack depth! Like, it could be the difference in a couple of games at least! This sucks!
I swear the 7/8 people were the craziest of the crazies even when they were making the predictions before Meant's departure (huge huge blow).

Yeah, it's gonna be nearly impossible to replace the 31 tackles and 1.5 sacks he had last year. No way the next man up can produce at that level. I say losing Reggie Meant will cost us 2 games minimum. Lol, c'mon man.

Kind of like when we did the "next man up" thing when Nerlens went down a few years ago? How did that work out? Hopefully, if I put it in terms you can understand, you will get it. There is no next man up at this position. We are already playing kids before they are ready. Sure, somebody will move up and play the position but they will not play it as well as Regie did. Whats worse is that the player who fills his spot would have been the player who would have stepped in for a couple of downs to give Meant a break. The 2nd string guy will now be the starter and the player who has to give him a break will be even further down the depth chart. It could also cause us to burn a red shirt and that could affect the DL for years to come. I am not sure what your story is. Probably just have no clue and like to spout off but this is a very big deal.
Nerlens Noel was the star, heart and soul of the team and a lottery pick. Reggie Meant is not. That's a terrible comparison.

To be fair, Meant absolutely knocked it out of the park last season before he got injured. Then CJ stepped up and Meant took a backseat role. Before the Florida game injury, Meant was performing at a high level.

Why can no one here grasp the concept that DT's are not statistic leaders?
I get that, I'm just not gonna pretend that we just lost and All-SEC performer. Meant is solid but his loss isn't gonna cost us several games like others have suggested.

We're likely gonna lose more guys before the season starts and definitely as the season goes on, so will everyone else. This is football, there always has been and always will be attrition.

I can agree with that. I don't think Meant is the season breaker either. But you can't judge a DT on his stats. It's more about occupying space...of course there's more to it than that, but mainly is about clogging up the lanes forcing the run to the outside where hopefully your defensive ends and linebackers come up and make plays.

I think Meant was the best of what we have after Elam. Personally, this year I think Elam becomes the star everyone has been waiting to see. I think there is a significant talent gap between him and the rest of our DT's.

But I don't think there is one between Meant and the rest of the guys. So yah it sucks that he's gone, but no he doesn't kill an already weak spot we had on the team.

Not a surprising take seeing as it is coming from one of the board jesters. You and Ulismyman are two peas in a pod. Both players were extremely important to their teams and neither could be replaced with comparable talent. In fact, DL and QB are the two positions we can least afford to lose a player. After further review, it was a great comparison but a terrible observation on your part.
