Serious question from someone not religious but knowledgable of religions. How can reconcile with a religion with such a long list of inconsistency, unbiblical doctrine (if the Bible is your guiding document), and systematic moral lapses? Selling indulgences, the inquisition, unmarried priests, the Crusades, priests as intercessors to God, rampant turn-the-other way pedophilia, a worshipped pope, etc.
I’m proud to be a faithful Catholic. The church is firmly rooted in the Bible and is not unbiblical at all. The church as comprised of people have clearly committed wrongs in its history, but is guided by the Holy Spirit and the promise of Jesus that “the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.”
The selling of indulgences was wrong, was essentially a local / regional problem and not an official universal church policy, and furthermore was done away with 400-500 years ago.
The inquisition… something I can’t defend, but again was predominant an issue confined mostly to Spain in the 1500s (?). The church has acknowledged this was wrong.
Unmarried priests…. Admittedly, there is nothing in Scripture that requires priests to be single and celibate. These became an official practice of the church about 1,000 years ago. Scripture states that a person can best serve the Lord in the single and unmarried state, which I can agree with and respect…. But on the other hand, I believe the fact that disputes over what was priest’s family property versus church property played a role in this policy change.
Crusades…. Muslims were abusing Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land, and were threatening conquest over Christian territories. Christians took the fight to them, but sadly were mostly unsuccessful.
Priests as intercessors to God… not sure what your critique is here(?)
Pedophilia – a terrible stain on the church’s legacy which has caused enormous damage and cause many people to lose their faith. Pedophilia is a scourge that is not limited to the Catholic faith
Worshipped pope… Totally false, our pope is the head of the church but is not worshipped…. Our current pope is especially not someone I would worship.
Peace
