The problem for Iowa is, that in most fans' minds, they have a good team every five or six years. Their record over the past years have been:
7-5
6-7
6-6
9-4
11-2
8-5
7-6
4-8
8-5
7-6
11-0
Nebraska's record has been much better than that and we fired the coach for it. In fact, last year we beat Iowa and won nine games, and that wasn't good enough for Nebraska Football.
Nebraska has won 9 games or more, 47 out of the last 54 years!
I know this is sounding like a slam, but Iowa fans have to admit they were calling for Ferentz's head in quite a few of the years listed above. I hope they continue to play better and do make this a rivalry.
What I'm saying is "respect" is earned over the long haul, not when a team pops up and has a good year.
Having said all that, if Iowa beats us, I hope they get into the playoffs and shut some of these TV pundits up. I do love the smart, disciplined, tough football that they play.
Good post.
There's inconsistencies and delusions on both sides. Iowa's run from 2002-2004 was great (31-8, 3 top 10's) but it was followed by ten years of pretty "blah" football. There's a segment of Iowa's fanbase that props Kirk up for those three seasons boosting his career accomplishments, and the other segment that acknowledges just how long ago that was. And Iowa fans, just like Nebraska fans, and fans of every team, look back at some seasons and say, "But we were THIS close to being such-and-such", and get a little miffed when other fanbases don't also recognize that. Let's be fair, you guys are doing that very thing this season. And that's fine. Iowa's 2008 & 2010 teams were better than their record. They lost a few last year they shouldn't have. Just like this year's Husker team is better than their record, and I know you all could point out games in the Pelini era that could've/should've gone your way.
Now, to address where the OP is coming from...Nebraska fans point to NC's as one of the reasons not to respect Iowa. Well, those were a long time ago. We both have the same number of NC's this century: ZERO. For all the talk of expecting/aspiring for them, where has it gotten NU Football? It's gotten you 9-win seasons (which are fine, but not to you) and coaches fired because of it (which may end up being not so fine). In the end, what is the difference between a program that "aspires" for greatness and wins 8-9 games per season, and another program which "accepts mediocrity" but wins 7-8 games per season?
Not a whole lot.
In this century:
Iowa is 132-66 (45-17, 40-24, 37-27 in five-year blocks)
Nebraska is 136-68 (41-22, 43-24, 42-22)
Both teams with 2 sub-.500 seasons. Both with five 10-win seasons. Iowa's record is more front-loaded and Nebraska's is more consistent. We'll see what the future brings. Iowa fans are excited for the future, and with good reason. Nebraska, you guys always seem optimistic for the future
