Rich Brooks on UK Football this season

Basically said that it starts with Patrick Towles , was too inconsistent in reading defenses, throwing a catchable ball, and making routine plays. Said that he succeeded because Andre Woods on was able to do those things very well.

Also said that rookie head coaching mistakes may have cost UK 2 or 3 games, says if talent was better they could have won anyways. But said that any coach that is a first time head coach has to learn how to handle different situations and that it takes more than 3 or 4 years to learn them. Says coaches that has coached 6 or 7 years or longer still learn how to handle different situations.


Interesting comments from Rich Brooks. The said truth is that UK has never been able to lure in a hot head coach from a lower rank. When they try those coaches usually hold out for a different job. Only one who didn't was Half Mumme, which was at a D3 school. With that said, if UK fans want the hot and sexy name as coach then we have to deal with head coaches who were previously coordinators and learning to be a head coach on the job, or we have to get a coach like Rich Brooks who was older and heading into retirement. I know some said to go after Brohm at WKU, but if he subscribes to Urban Meyer's way of doing things then he'd hold out on going to UK to find a place that isn't nearly as hard to win at.

I have told by someone VERY close to JB that he indeed would take the UK job, but he said JB told him it would take six years to have it stable

No way. If Brohm takes over after next year going into 2017, we will have a lot of upperclassmen. We will also have pretty good depth by then too.

I would love for Brohm to be our coach. He is the one guy that I desperately want to take over if Stoops fails. He's an offensive genius and we'd be loaded on offense by then.

I was told this last summer right before the season started... he must feel totally different than that now I will have to ask the friend the next time I see him

Good post, OP. This is something I've said several times over the last yr. It is very possible that the recruited talent will rise and save Stoops' job while he learns how to coach.



In response to Brohm. How's his recruiting? We've had a few decent HC'e at Kentucky but most have failed due to lack of recruiting.

-Guys like Krok leaving
-Guys like Tubman not able to attend
-etc.


Seems like the lines have taken the biggest hit among the team over the last few yrs.

Speaking of LT have heard some rumblings he still wants to come back and it could possibly happen...had an excellent year in Tx...

Slugger, I followed Trinity this season and could not find any reports on Tubman. He did not participate in any games, as far as I can tell. Did you hear something about his play?
Just wondering. Would love to have him come back, if possible.

If you guys listened to Mark Stoops interview on KSR he basically confirmed what Rich Brooks said about him. Mark Stoops said that talent needs to increase so that every boneheaded decision he makes isn't magnified.

Lets admit, coaches like Hugh Freeze, and Dan Mullen, and others who had little to no experience walking into those Head Coach jobs had more talent and could overcome coaching mistakes. Stoops is at the point where his coaching has to be perfect and its unrealistic to think that will happen.

Freeze and Mullen both inherited train wrecks. Plus they took jobs in the much tougher SECW. Freeze went bowling in year one. Mullen would have too had he not inherited a 5-8 QB. If the kid had been 5-10, they would have beaten LSU for their sixth win.

If you've had the benefit of coaching in the SECE in the last three years and not been bowl eligible even once, you have underachieved. It's never been weaker and with all of the coaching changes in the last couple of years, it likely won't be again.

Yes I was told his play was excellent in Texas by the same person that told me Lloyd wanted to come back to the University

Why? Stoops has been bringing in talent, is he still 6 years away from being there?

So then if the coach everyone is drooling over says it would take 6 years to even get it stable, then why is everyone ready to throw Stoops out? By admission, people acknowledge the improved recruiting, bit don't want to give the guy time to coach thise players. Anyone who thought this was a 3 or 4 year turnaround is really naive IMO. This thing will take 5 at least to get to consistent bowl seasons. And will take longer than that to compete for championships.

Mullen and Freeze also coach in a helluva lot hard division than Stoops. If we were in the west, we probably would have lost every SEC game.
