Awesome update!!!Quoting from the UWW wrestling site on 12/22, "Rin Sakamoto dec. Daito Katssume 4-0 for the 57 KG title. He officially enrolls at OK State next month to officially compete in matches for the Cowboys. He won his first match 15-6 and in the semis he dec. Asian bronze medalist Rikuto Arai 10-4. In his finals match he was hampered by a left knee injury. He returns to the U.S. on 1/11 2 days before the start of the new semester at Oklahoma State where he will compete at 125 pounds. One goal is to become an NCAA Champion. He will return to Japan in the spring for the
Meiji cup All-Japan championships, the 2nd of 2 qualifiers for the World championships. To help make the transition back to freesyle he will enter the JOC Junior Olympic Cup in April, an under 20 tournament in which he placed 3rd
last year. His older sister Yu,the World U23 champion at 53kg is a member of the Northern Michigan University team.
I really look forward to seeing this guy wrestle. Grey shirt sounds smart for this year. Next year he can redshirt, or take the 125 position depending on wrestling off with Spratley. If he is behind Spratley he can focus on getting bigger for next year and wrestle 133.Quoting from the UWW wrestling site on 12/22, "Rin Sakamoto dec. Daito Katssume 4-0 for the 57 KG title. I had this same convo with @Howie_FartzHeβs probably not getting biggerβ¦
No, itβs not. Heβs not a huge 57kg guy, so 65 is unlikelyβ¦but possible.I had this same convo with @Howie_Fartz
I know yall are going off of what people are saying around the room and yall very well may be right but the kid has already been wrestling up at 134 (61kg). He was the 2023 U20 61kg and he lost out to Ono for the 61kg world spot this year. Him going 133 isnβt some crazy notion
No Im saying 61 not 65. Until now heβs been wrestling 61kg for the last couple years. Iβm not saying heβs a big 61 but heβs young. Iβm just not ready to pigeon hole the kid as a 125 when we need a 133 and heβs been wrestling at 134 (61kg) for two years. No, itβs not. Heβs not a huge 57kg guy, so 65 is unlikelyβ¦but possible.
Iβm just anxious to see him folkstyle go.
If he's enrolling for second semester, doesn't that mean he isn't greyshirting? I thought greyshirts couldn't be enrolled at the school...Grey shirt sounds smart for this year.
61 is the non-Olympic weight isnβt it?No Im saying 61 not 65. Until now heβs been wrestling 61kg for the last couple years. Iβm not saying heβs a big 61 but heβs young. Iβm just not ready to pigeon hole the kid as a 125 when we need a 133 and heβs been wrestling at 134 (61kg) for two years.
Yes. The one Ono just won61 is the non-Olympic weight isnβt it?
for sure. Tough spot to be in for Rin with Rei (at least heβs aging) at 57 and Ono at 61Ono is probably the best P4P wrestler in the world right now.
Merry Christmas to all of you! I hope you have a happy and joyful holiday spent with friends and family!
