89 yrs old. Scary fastball pitcher for the Bucs. Could be wild at times. I remember him wiping off his glasses on hot nights. Used to intimidate the batters even more.

Yeah, he had a handkerchief to wipe his face. One time he wiped his face with the handkerchief and then wiped the ball and the opposing manager just flipped. Big man. RIP.
Bob was a favorite of mine growing up. Mrs G and I started dating in 1966. My family had Pirate season tickets so we spent a lot of time at the ballpark. My wife had never been to a Pirate game before dating me and the 1st time we went to Forbes Field Bob was pitching. Rest in Peace.

For those instantly wondering where Koufax was in 1964 K’s, that was the season he got injured. He was 19-5 in 28 starts meaning that he missed around 12 starts. I remember that he would have been in the hunt to win 30. 64 could have very easily been his best year if he had not gotten hurt.

Indeed. Guys like Roberto Clemente, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, were my heros. I would hide a transistor radio under my pillow and fall asleep to the Gunner broadcasting games on KDKA. A magical time, and part of Baseball's Golden Age.
I never had the privilege to see any of these guys play, but appreciate their accomplishments and contributions to the game. It was the golden era of baseball.
Bob Veale’s glasses were fogging up so much one night at Forbes Field (or were broken) against the Cardinals that he wanted to pitch without them. Lou Brock purportedly refused to hit against Veale unless the pitcher had his glasses on, and the umpire told Veale to put them glasses back on.
