A true patriot and father of the signature. Taken far too soon....

Sad to hear. He was a joy to watch as a player and was a winner. The very first college basketball game I watched on TV was when Ohio State played California for the National Championship in 1960. Jerry Lucas was the star for Ohio State but John Havlichek was also on the team and he played like the All American he was. Ohio State won the title and was a great team but "little ole" Kentucky beat them in the regular season.

RIP Hondo

That title game was played at the Cow Palace. That place seemed old to me then. Almost forgotten now...but it's still there.

I don't know who won the SEC in 1960. SEC site says Ole Miss. Wikipedia says Auburn.

He played all-out all the time.

He played on great teams.

As good/great as he was, he was never the best player on his team -- college or pro.
I watched Hondo in the 70s, more like mid-70s until his retirement. What I found so amazing about his game was his stamina. His motor never quit.

Rupp wasn't interested.

I wonder why. (We signed big men Art Laib and Mark Soderberg.)

Cowens' career numbers at Florida State: 19/17. He once had 31 rebounds vs LSU.

Issel's senior year, UK lost only two games and was ranked #1 or #2 for almost the entire season.

They would have been almost unbeatable with Cowens -- a tough matchup for Jacksonville and UCLA.

By the way, Dave Cowens was born the same day as Dan Issel.

Larry Steele played 2G and SF in 9 seasons in the NBA.

Our 1970 lineup:

Issel
Pratt
Tom Parker
Larry Steele
Terry Mills
Jim Dinwiddie
Kent Hollenbeck
Stan Key

With Cowens the front line would have been the best in the country. Back court probably would have been adequate.

Would Coach Rupp have played Steele as guard (as a replacement for Mike Casey)?

The strength of Jacksonville and UCLA was their front court. Kentucky's would have been better.
