We've argued great teams, players, coaches, etc. etc. One Chicago high school football fact that can never be argued is that there has been only one Heisman Trophy winner from here. Johnny Lattner passed away last night after about a year long battle with lung cancer at 83.
Johnny Lattner was one of the most affable, generous people you could ever hope to meet. He donated the trophy to charity events to help with fundraising. He was always accommodating to autograph and picture seekers. He would stop and talk football, politics or nonsense with just about anyone that engaged him.
A true gentleman and fine representative of our city has passed. He will be sorely missed by many. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
