RIP Maple Leaf Mel

3 year old filly was 5-0 and comfortably leading the Grade 1 Test at Saratoga yesterday when she broke her leg just a few feet from the finish line and had to be euthanized.

I was going to attach a link but it's difficult to watch. It reminded me of the great Ruffian who was 10-0 and never trailed in a race before breaking down in a match race against Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure in 1975.

She was an undefeated filly and a NY bred. She was owned by Bill Parcells. Truly a terrible ending. RIP Maple Leaf Mel!
