Indeed he was. The 64 ROY race was Allen, Carty, and Jim Ray Hart. Not to mention Oliva on the other side. Carty was the first player to record a hit when the Braves moved to ATL.

Hart and Allen crossed paths in the Eastern League in 62 which was strange given that the Giants maintained a minor league team cross country.

There is a great story about their league batting title chase that year. It involves an all nighter and each trying to diminish the sharpness of the other to get an advantage in the title chase.

The Giants were fearsome with an engine room of Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, and Hart. Hart had a hard life after the game.

my oh my, could they swing the lumber. I remember feeling fortunate any time the Fightins got through that portion of the Giants lineup without giving up any runs. Alas, that didn't seem to happen too often.
