Tenor of Sam and Dave fame (Soul Man, Hold On, I'm Comin', several others). Great expressive voice dripping with soul. He was 86. Died Friday. Not many artists make music like that anymore although some of Sugar Ray Rayford is pretty close.

He did a fantastic job singing Please Call Home during the Gregg Allman celebration concert.

Great duo for energetic soul and R&B. Always thought Sam & Dave were MoTown, but they were Memphis Stax Records. Belushi & Aykroyd cover of their "Soul Man" was a good tribute.

Stax Records alumni:
Sam and Dave
Wilson Pickett
Otis Redding
Eddie Floyd
Isaac Hayes
Albert King
The Staples Singers
Booker T and the MGs
And others...

Pretty good lineup of talent, I'd say.

Steve Cropper (guitar), Duck Dunn (bass) and, I think, at least one of the horn players were Stax/Booker T band members that played with The Blues Brothers. The BB backing band (also had Matt 'Guitar' Murphy on guitar) was damn good. Made even Jake and Elwood seem like they were real musicians.
