Every time i hear Tony Bennett, I recall being at Russell Bufalino's birthday in the early 80's at Gus Genetti's hotel in Wilkes-Barre. My father-in-law a labor organizer for 542 Operating Engineers & Bufalino were close friends (not business parteners).

Russell came over to our table and told Pop that his boys reached out to Tony Bennett as a surprise birthday gift, but sadly, Tony had other engagements. R.I.P. Tony

"The Benedettos lives were forever changed by WWII, Tony Bennett turned 18 in 1944 and was drafted into the U.S. Army. By March 1945, he was deploying to Europe with the 63rd Infantry Division, replacing casualties lost in the Battle of the Bulge. In his 1998 autobiography "The Good Life," he called the war a "front row seat in hell."

That’s a cool story Step. The Buffalino home was just a couple of blocks away from ours. Dorrance and Lathrop or Tioga if I recall.

Very modest ranch house...

Actually B. V., Members of the nation's Italian families and body guards were there according to the Old PA Crime Commission report the following day in the Sunday paper. Genetti's opened up several ball rooms to accommodate the event. The ballroom's walls were lined with each family's security standing shoulder to shoulder.

My one brother in law sitting next to me whispered with his head down, "Jesus Step, I hope nobody breaks a balloon at the party."

A little while after Russell said to Pop "but sadly, Tony had other engagements"....and left our table, the lights in the ballrooms were dimmed and Tony Bennett strolled through the audience singing his tunes

On an off topic B.V., did you ever have lunch at the King Court Diner on N. Main, across from King's College buildings. Best greasy burgers around. The walls were covered with signed pics of celebrities, a Pope, pro ball players, etc. It was a gathering place of the W-B Police and detectives, County judges, the local FBI, bookies, Bufalino dropped in ocassionally.
My father in law wound up owning the diner by default. Long story,
