This one hits me really hard. This guy was as instrumental toward the development of the alternative music genre as any, and was responsible for glam. I can't think of any, other than the Velvet Underground and maybe the Stooges, that were as important.
One of the reasons why I love "The Life Aquatic: With Steve Zizzou" is because a large portion of the soundtrack is Bowie being sung in Portuguese. RIP Mr. Bowie. Your rest is well deserved.

I share your appreciation of music and respect your musical knowledge. Yours and my tastes are different but we do share some common musical interests. Bowie was one of the greats. Not afraid to try something new. Aladdin Sane might be my favorite album of his. Hard to pick one. Life on Mars gives me chills when I hear it.
I like most everything prior to "Let's Dance." And there were even a few good ones on that album. His first album had some unique stuff on it, and I enjoy listening to it, but the Space Oddity album put him on the map. His best to me had to be either The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust or Hunky Dory. But also really like his real early stuff.
His very first album is the only one I do not own. Hunky Dory is great. I like the three Berlin albums. That was his progressive phase. I am sort of a prog music lover.
Wow, you know your Bowie much better than I do. His first album is kinda cool. Has a little more early Kinks, Small Faces sound to it, which I love both of those bands, but Bowie had that magical creativity that isn't equaled by many. Space Oddity is one of the best songs ever written. When I karaoke, that is one of 2 or 3 of my main staples.
When your favorite musicians from your prime start dropping, you are reminded yet again....we're all getting older. Bowie was badass, R.I.P. my man.
Bowie's music never stopped progressing. Every rock channel on XM radio is playing him today and can play him because he falls into so many different types of rock music. How many rock musicians can say that? He has the old 60's sound when he first came out, the rock - guitar heavy stuff from the 70's, he brought new wave to the western world in the late 70's & 80's, in the mid 80's he played pop, and since he's been pretty indie dance. He's influenced so many artist and never trust a musician that doesn't list Bowie as one of its biggest influences. IMO if you don't like Bowie you have a bad taste in music.

Sad news indeed. The great part is how he'll live on in his music. He was a weird one, but damn if I still didn't play his stuff. I remember one night some fifteen years ago when I took a drive out in the night with a friend. I had my moon roof wide open and headed out of the city and to the countryside. Played Bowie the whole drive.
I know that shiz happens, but 69 is still way too young. Bowie touched generations. He also pissed off countless parents. Good.

My favorite artist of all time. Own every album. Ziggy Stardust, in my opinion, is the greatest album ever made.
One of the last true originals. I have every American album of his between TMWSTW and Never Let Me Down except Low. Thankful I was able to see him twice in concert. RIP, Thin White Duke.
Couldn't agree more. This riff is timeless. Listening to this, flooring the boat with my dad on the lake and that riff playing throughout the whole song. I'm a little younger than most on the board but my musical soul knows today is a sad day. Can't replicate what he did for the momentum and progression in the history of music. RIP DB!

You and I happen to be of the same opinion. Ziggy Stardust has been my favorite album literally since the first time I heard it.
Wes Anderson's use of "Life on Mars." "Life Aquatic" is a pretty funny movie if you ever want to listen to an entire soundtrack of Bowie. It definitely qualifies as a dark comedy.
