Really, don't you guys think we could be the best rivalry in all of college BB?? No one can deny we have the two best programs in the country. I also feel, if truth be known, we do respect each other as having one of the top two teams in the game. I just don't think UL or UNC come anywhere near our two schools. any thoughts??

In my eyes Duke has only one rival and that's pretty clear and it's been that way long before I was born and I'm in my 64th year. I'm pretty sure if you took a poll of Duke fans and gave them two choices yes UK is our rival or no UK is our rival UK would not get one vote from a true dye in the wool Duke fans. There are just like all fans Duke fans that may consider UK somewhat of a rival but most of those are on the fringe fans that just don't understand the Duke/unc rivalry. There's been Md. fans in the past that thought they were Duke's rival but since they left the conference no more talk of that. Your nickname does raise a flare. Gary-7/Moe8. Any connection? no connection with Gary-7. the purpose for my thread was basically just thinking out loud, and really not giving it any deep thought. I have a couple years on you and I'M just tired of Louisville. We beat them every year and I was just looking for competition.
I get annoyed with UK because of their fans (no offense intended, OP). I hate UNC because every single thing about them necessitates blind hatred as an immediate response. That's the difference. UK and Duke are competitors; we will never be rivals.

You see myself and every Duke fan I can think of never gets tired of beating unc in anything. I don't want unc to win in anything against anyone and that includes UK. I don't want them to score a point, run or goal in any sport and that includes women's curling if they have a team. As far as the Gary-7 reference I do apologize for that but if you go over to the thr board and take a look at Gary-7 you will see why. OFC
For as much as I hate to admit it, I don't think you can discount UNC as being up there with Duke and UK for best program. They did just come 5 seconds from winning their 6th. They still have the prestige, Jordan factor. When it comes to recruiting however, Duke and UK are no doubt 1 and 1a with Arizona a distant 3.
They did not come within 5 seconds of winning it. Paige tied the game. They lost on a buzzer beater but even if that doesn't go in, it goes to OT. You could argue they could have won in OT, but they were not 5 seconds away from winning. Might be nitpicking but that's just a light blue glasses view of it to make themselves feel even closer than they were and that they were robbed.
LOL, I am positive you could go to any of the UK boards and be told the exact same thing concerning UL. I have hated them for 69 years and quite frankly, I have grown weary of them. you may change your mind after you dominate UNC year after year as we do UL. It does take some of the intensity away or at least it has for me. I respect you guys a lot more than I do UL.

If we played every year, I suppose we could have a little bit of a rivalry. But as it is, we've only played 7 times in the past 36 years. Hard to build a rivalry around that. Rivals on the recruiting trail mostly.
I agree with Alan here. UNC will always be the true rival. There is just too much history to change that.
Duke-UK does not hold a candle to Duke-UNC by any stretch of the imagination. There is a unique rivalry when it comes to Duke-UNC, especially if you are born and raised in NC. You choose early in life who you will pull for and never sway from that. Newborn babies come out of the hospital daily with either a Duke or UNC outfit on and it never changes from day 1. My 6 and my 13 yr old knows better than to bring anything in our house with UNC on it. I will ground a kid for that. The best rivalry in sports IMO.
Because of Calipari and how he manages his team, UK will never be more to me than something less than just another team as long as Cal is there. I could care less if we never played UK again. Duke does not need to do it in order to prove anything, and I do not think that K has any great desire to play them. In my mind, whatever UK has achieved should always be followed by an asterisk (*), not unlike Barry Bonds' home run record.
UNCheats' achievements are way more deserving to be followed by an asterisk... They are no doubt the biggest cheaters ever.
No other school will ever rival the Tarholes as Duke's number one most hated . In fact that might be the best rivalry in college sports. That being said, I would like to see Duke play UK more often. Maybe not every year but maybe every couple of years. Duke always seems to play a couple of good OOC games each year. KY would be a good addition. KY should be glad to get Duke. They play in a weak BB conference compared to the ACC.
Aaahhh yes. One that can be filed under the OJ files. Just keep throwing millions at it until it goes away. Money can buy anything and anybody.
Moe here is the difference as I see it between UK and UNC. Its fine If UK wins every athletic event they participate in except when they are playing Duke in said event and in hoops high profile games such as tournament games in which case we like to see you lose. If you are playing UNC then we root for you in any sporting event even if like Sky said, it's Curling. Possible exceptions would be if you are playing an ACC team of our liking or a team from any school in North Carolina such as a UNC-Wilmington or High Point College or UNC-Pembroke University we will root for said team. We do reserve the right to not root for UK unless you are playing UNC. It would also be fine with us Dukies if the Kentucky National Guard invaded Chapel Hill and took the campus hostage and buried the Dean Dome with Roy's nanner puddin.

This. I really don't care if UK wins or loses as long as they lose against Duke and UK wins against unc* but they can be said about every body that plays Duke or unc*. So UK being our rival just doesn't fit.OFC

I believe you have your share of mountains.I have to drive across state to see one.I enjoy lake living myself. I took my son to Brevard to visit the campus there and I sure saw some mountains and mountain folk. I am talking deliverance here.
Hahaha if you went to Brevard and thought you saw deliverance type people you've clearly never been to Eastern Kentucky.. Although the Candler area is where a lot of the cast was from.. The main bad guy of the movie actually lives in my town and I see him at the grocery store ever so often, I kid you not he has pet squirrels that he keeps on a rope and brings in the stores and it hides behind his beard lol
The SEC hasn't had a top 5 RPI Conference Ranking since 2012; they usually have one or two really good teams, followed by a slew of ho-hum teams that lose multiple OOC games to programs like Kennesaw State and Winthrop.
That has always cracked me up. Maryland was not, is not, and never will be our rival in anything. Period. Just because they view playing us as their Super Bowl doesn't mean we're rivals in the least. Glad those goons are out of the ACC for good.
Louisville is our lone rival, plain and simple. I love it when we beat them in anything and physically ache when we lose to them. Duke, UNC, Kansas, UCLA, UConn, Michigan State and Indiana are great programs that we compete with but that's only in basketball. With UL everything counts.
Take it from someone that lives outside of the states of North Carolina and Kentucky: Been watching College BB for years, and there never has been, or ever will be, another rivalry like "Duke-North Carolina"!! Nuff said.
