Moderators can do several things, but renaming a handle is not one of the things they have the power to do.
Besides, I've known him as @Goldbanger for years, so even if I did have the capability to change his handle, I would not want to do so.
I'm always surprised when I have to explain the history. I did so quite a few times on the old site (Rivals), though at this point I can't recall if I ever did so on the wrestling board there. Hence, your not knowing the history, while surprising to me, is somewhat understandable.
In the mid-90s, there was an Ohio State student that started a web site for Ohio State recruiting. He then added one for Penn State recruiting. I believe he had a few other college-specific recruiting sites, but after all these years I forget some of the minor details. (The sites were focused on football recruiting.)
Anyway, this was in the Wild Wild West days of the Internet, where people taking proprietary information/copyrighted information/etc. and posting it on web sites was pretty common. I'll come back to that point in a second.
I was also on a Penn State football listserve which primarily focused on PSU football, but like most sports message boards today, other subjects would also be discussed.
So back to the Ohio State student -- I had contacted him via e-mail, mostly to update his information on PSU football recruiting, or seek clarification on something he posted, and had established a bit of a relationship with him. One day (I think it was in 1996; not certain) out of the blue, he sent me an e-mail asking if I wanted to take over the Penn State recruiting site that he had, but if so, it would have to be moved to another server. If not, he was going to shut it down the following day. I thought it was related to his being a senior, and about to graduate, but something seemed a little off about the urgency. (I subsequently learned that one of the recruiting services whose info had been his prime source of Ohio State and Penn State recruiting information (it would come by 900 number, or fax, or by the owner appearing in print or on radio), had their lawyer send him a letter saying they would sue him if he didn't take down the web sites within 24 or 48 hours (I can't remember which).) Several of us on the listserve had gotten used to looking at and discussing what was on the Penn State site he ran. So I posted something on the listserve asking if anyone had access to a server that could host the web site. I indicated that I'd help with the information side of the web site, but that I didn't have a place to host it. Another guy on the listserve did have access to a server, so we jointly took over the web site.
The URL for the site was http://www.plotit.com/psu_recruits.html. If you poke around on the Wayback Machine web archives, you can find it. Anyway, the message board on the site became the #1 site to discuss Penn State football on the web, and the web site became the top site on the web for Penn State football information.
There was a real sense of community back then. We didn't have any advertising on the site (Internet advertising was not too big back then, and my partner and I had full-time jobs as well as families). In time, we had to move it to another server, and we told folks about the cost to do so, and quite a few people donated to help make that happen.
I believe I moved to BWI's site on Rivals in 2001. As part of the agreement to move, we had to shut down the Penn State Recruiting web site.
There are a lot of folks that followed me from the original message board to BWI's Rivals site/message boards, and continue to frequent one or more of the Penn State sites. It's somewhat common for them, if challenged about how long they've been a fan, or how long they've had a handle, etc., to say something along the lines of "I go back to the plotit days" or "... to the plotit board."
And that's the history of that site, the plotit.com board, my involvement in this crazy scene, as well the shared pasts of many long-time posters.

You moved to rivals in either 1999 or 2000(or maybe earlier). Myself and Judge Smails won a Rivals 100 recruiting contest I believe was in 2000. It was the year Kevin Jones graduated high school.

Mid 90's? Of course few of us knew anything about sports message boards since wrestling didn't start until 2010.
Many years ago on the current HVI board I started a thread entitled Tell Us A Little About Yourself. I thought it might be useful to bring the concept to this thread since there are going to be quite a few posters who know nothing about each other. I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread or not, but I will err on just keeping the topic here and Tom can obviously change that if he deems it prudent. I'll start first.
I'm 61 years old and grew up on the Oregon Coast in the North Bend/Coos Bay area. My sister's house in Coos Bay is about half a mile from Marshfield High, where Travis Wittlake went to school. Her house is also only two homes down from where Steve Prefontaine grew up. I wrestled two years JUCO and made it to Nationals one year where I went 1-1. I then transferred to Southern Oregon University where I wrestled for a year. I never wrestled my senior year because I had lost my joy for the sport.
I moved to San Diego to join SDPD in 1987 and retired in 2019. I have a 19-year-old daughter and a 29-year-old daughter who is getting her Doctorate in Chemistry at Baylor University. I am one of those fans who started following Penn State in 2011. I had not followed wrestling for years other than to watch the occasional NCAA Finals broadcast on TV. It was about 2010 or 2011 that I started following wrestling online. I soon read about some undefeated freshman named David Taylor and the rest is history! I consider myself a PSU fan not solely because of their success, but also for the way they wrestle and the character of the wrestlers I have seen come through the program. I am consistently impressed with the character of not only Penn State wrestlers, but wrestlers in general.
If any of you are ever in San Diego on vacation or business, I am sincere in inviting you to stay at my home if lodging is ever an issue. I have a beautiful home on eight acres that sits up against the Cleveland National Forest. And as an added benefit, I am only a 15 minute drive from San Diego Safari Park, which used to be called the Wild Animal Park. Thanks again to all of you who make this Forum so enjoyable.

Presidents weekend of 2023 I was only 15 mins from your house, because we stopped at the Safari park, until we found out how much they wanted for tickets.
We went to Bernardo winery and had an awesome day instead!

My wife and I DID drive out to the Wild Animal Park when we were in SD in 1985…
…and we enjoyed it …EVEN MORE THAN the much more famous zoo in the city park!

I believe I know/remember the majority of the handles on the Rivals wrestling board from the years that I ran that board. But I haven't visited that board more than a handful of times since I moved to On3 (excluding the past week, when several folks have linked posts from that board in posts on this board), so I may forget some of the handles, and I don't know any that joined that community after I departed. It does make it easier for me to remember folks if they have their old handle, but it's certainly not a requirement. An Old Pair of Asics it will be for you.
