Based on the nice crowd in Greenville tonight, it looks as if Augusta County's first experimental weekend of Middle School/JV football doubleheaders was a rousing success. There were games played at other schools as well and this will be a regular thing any time two county teams are meeting one another. I am not sure about the participation level of Staunton and Waynesboro.
Anyway, Stuarts Draft won the Middle School opener tonight 34-6, as they opened up a 22-0 lead and coasted to victory. If there was a key play that defined the game, it was the last play of the first half. SD was leading 22-6 at the time so the game was not exactly decided. However, facing a 4th down at the Riverheads 47, they scored on a long touchdown pass and run to stretch the lead to 28-6 at the half.
Riverheads then prevailed 20-14 in the JV nightcap. The Gladiators scored a pair of second quarter TDs, thanks in large part to running back Jackson Stuples. He rambled for about 70 yards early in the quarter to set up a TD run by Tanner McCray, and then after a Cougar turnover, he took it in himself for a 14-0 Riverheads halftime lead.
The Cougars then scored on a 4th and long 34-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 14-8 late in the third quarter. But the Gladiators responded by taking some time off the clock on a long drive that carried over into the fourth. Cason Croft pushed across the insurance TD with just under four minutes remaining.
The Cougars made it interesting by scoring a second TD with just under a minute left. But Riverheads saved the victory by easily covering the onside kick. With the win the Big Red JVs are 1-1 on the season, and next Thursday's doubleheader will take place at Buffalo Gap.
Meanwhile, SD and RHS now turn their attention to Friday night's varsity game at the Cougar Den. Remember to heed my warning from earlier in the week about bringing a jacket. There can be a night and day temperature difference once the sun sets and we want you to be warm enough to enjoy the action!
