Just heard the announcers mention Kurt Roper (as OC for NCSt?). Interesting…

I’m old enough that I never mind NC State losing. I’m sure King Ward, who has me by a few years, would agree. My dad, who has Ward by a few years, certainly agrees.
Would you mind elaborating on the NC State bashing.... ?? - I'm no rookie either but my only couple of memories of NC State was when we went to Carter Finley back in the mid 80's and we were down at the half but had a great comeback but NC State wound up with the ball at like midfield and they threw a hail marry, which was incomplete. But the refs threw a flag for PI against us and gave them another chance. The second hail marry attempt wound up with them scoring..... and the refs had thrown a flag for PI against them....(their WR clearly shoved our guy down onto the ground) - but the crowd went nuts and the ref picked up the flag and walked off the field. - I was there that day. My mother threatened to scratch the eyes out of one NC State fan as we headed back to the car.....lol.

That one and the one where they essentially ended Todd Ellis's career.... those are the only 2 examples I have of NC State but it was sooo long ago that I kinda don't care anymore. Plus, my new GF is a NC State grad and fan, and I don't mind that. I told her, "Anybody but Clemson" She hates Clemson too.

My memories, as a kid in the 80s, were probably tainted by my dad, lol. We played them a lot in the 80s (at least in my memories), and my dad loved beating them as much as he enjoyed beating Clemson. So I took up the family grudge apparently.

But his disdain for NC State went back to the Frank McGuire days in basketball and some apparently really nasty blood between us and them. I think they came pretty close to having a brawl more than once. If King Ward finds this thread, maybe he could expound on it. And he could also tell me whether I used the word “expound” correctly, or if I should have used expand 😂

OK I spoke to athletic Director Bob Marcum on that Sunday night. I made him aware of a news video I had seen on the 11 o’clock news in Raleigh. Video showed the referee dropping the flag and then picking it up as the crowd went crazy. He was very interested in that and was pissed as well.

Yes sir, I was there. I saw it.

But as I was saying, I've grown up a lot since then, a lot of time has passed. All in all, I just don't have the hate in my heart against NC State anymore. We don't play them that much, etc...... water under the bridge for me at least.

That 48-0 beatdown the following year helped ease the pain as well.

I still don't like them for that reason. I was also at the game. But maybe I would grow out of disliking them if my girlfriend went there also.

It’s due to basketball in the ACC days. Tobacco Road, which included Wake Forest, but for me and I believe most it was mainly North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Duke in descending order. There is nothing now nor has there been since, including 1984 and the spurrier years in football, that come anywhere close to the popularity and notoriety of that Carolina basketball team or the intensity of those games. People who don’t know any better pooh pooh it because (1) they weren’t there and (2) it was a different set of circumstances then in terms of championships and play.

I spent a lot of time in NC with my work and I found the NC Statel fans to be a decent bunch. Now,the UNC fans were the ones who were insufferable. What a pompous bunch. They think they invented basketball much like the Ohio State fans think they invented football.Other than the freezing cold night at Carter Finley when the Pack fans rained chicken bones down on the Gamecocks,my dealings with Pack fans has been cordial.

We had some good battles with NCState. Eric Kramer. I remember the bad blood then. I also remember that fanny whooping we gave them.

I remember as a kid in the mid 1980's, NC state kept beating Clemson, when they were highly ranked, even one year when Clemson was undefeated, NC State was their first loss, NC State had their number for like 3 years in a row.

I always liked them the most among the ACC NC teams after that, :), i like UNC the least of the ACC North Carolina teams

They got bent out of shape up there in Raleigh when Ellis did the two shooter quick draw to their sideline in a televised night game, 86 I believe.

ACC basketball; that’s why us gamecock veterans hate the North Carolina schools. Roche cussing Dean Smith in chapel hill as he dribbled down the court, nc state taking out roche’s ankle, Duke flushing an effigy of Roche in a commode before a game up there. Charlie Scott, Lee Dedmond, lefty at Maryland gets honorable mention; good stuff, fun times.

I'm 71 and remember those days well.

I went to a prep school in NC. There were about 5 of us from SC. USC vs UNC basketball games meant spending the entire History class the next day talking smack.

Too bad the ending didn't suit my sensibilities. NC State, UNC, Duke - none of them can lose enough to suit me. 33 years in the SEC and we haven't come close to duplicating the hatred, and that's BEFORE you throw in UPC.

I'm a younger fan, my only experiences with them football wise were the monsoon in 1999, and the back to back games in 2008 and 2009. Now in basketball however, they've either run irrelevant or annoying for me. The early 2000s were the peak of my disdain for them, centered around one player(Julius Hodge) that just got on my damn nerves!
