If I remember correctly, they also count scholarships as an expense - the largest expense.

Wisconsin - $10M+ surplus

I'll let others check out the rest of the B10.

Notre Dame - $19M+ surplus

That's my private school example.

I dont think many of these numbers can be counted on to tell the full story, but NU's are especially interesting.

First question I would have is whether facility and other capitalized costs are expensed and included in the number? The second would be what is the overhead burden? Perhaps these factors are standardized but I doubt it.
