If you judge based on character you can toss a lot of the all time greats out
Shoeless wasn't the ringleader of the White Sox scandal, but he went along with it. Dudes didn't make much money back then and were especially vulnerable. I used to think Rose only bet on games while he was a manager, after reading a recent biography, I don't think that was true. I also used to think he would never bet on his team to lose or throw a game. I still 'mostly' stick by that.
As some have said, we're blurred the lines nowadays. Let them in, with an asterisk.
And?
Well depending on what standards you are applying, we can ax just about everyone pre Jackie Robinson. Anyone who was opposed to integration was just a filthy racist and shouldn’t be honored in anyway. Mickey Mantle was a degenerate drunk. Gaylord Perry threw spitballs, Hank Aaron was all about the greenies.
I never said they shouldn’t or couldn’t be in the Hall of Fame.
They shouldn’t be celebrated and lauded.
Personally I think his plaque should very much reference his gambling on baseball and the events that led to his ban.
Then we have no disagreement and I apologize for misunderstanding
Oh I think part of Rose and Jackson's legacy should be reflected in their hall of fame plaque. That is being historically accurateNo apologies necessary friend.
Jackson should definitely be in. Yes he was on the team from the Black Sox scandal, and he supposedly knew some of his teammates were throwing the games, but he did not. In fact he had a very good series. He hit .375 w/ 6 RBI in that series, and made 0 errors.Shoeless Joe is also removed from the permanent banned list too. I’m not sure about his story but his was a little more egregious than Roses if I recall . I thought They’d never let the black Sox players off the list
And also took money knowing it was a bribe as part of a conspiracy to fix the series.Shoeless Joe Jackson's batting average in the 1919 World Series was .375. He also had 12 hits, no errors, and hit the only home run for the White Sox in the series
I recently read a book on Shoeless and this is true. He certainly was not one of the ring leaders but went along. They tried to not make it obvious in the series by not getting swept, etc.And also took money knowing it was a bribe as part of a conspiracy to fix the series.
The "hero" of the series for the Sox was a pitcher named Dickie Kerr who won two games. Kerr later got in trouble for pitching in offseason barnstorming events to make extra $. Kerr was Stan Musial's minor league manager when Stan got hurt and was going to take his wife and newborn son and go home. Kerr took the family into his own home and convinced Stan to give the OF a chance. In later years when the Kerrs fell on hard times, Stan bought them a new house.I recently read a book on Shoeless and this is true. He certainly was not one of the ring leaders but went along. The Reds won the series 5 games to 3, so it wasn't a total lay down by the White Sox, they had to make it believable.Jackson should definitely be in. So actually his was LESS egregious than Rose.
