It's stupid. It's stupid in basketball and even moreso in baseball. Relying strictly on data is just as ignorant as not relying on data at all.

To basketballs credit they have moved away from it. It’s now a mostly secret formula. I guess the good thing about that is you can’t try to game it like you can RPI.

Been around for years. Rewards teams for playing tough schedules and winning tougher games.

Know its a dead horse around here, but typically the SEC benefits very well with the RPI metric.... as seen with the top 5 RPI rated teams are all from the SEC.

We dont rate well this year because we dodged Tenn and Kentucky.. and because our non conference scheduled sucked to put it mildly. Had we played just one tough weekend in the non conference our RPI would be probably 10-11 right now and we'd be on the bubble of hosting a SUPER not hosting period.

It's not just the relying on data. They're relying on bad data with RPI (really bad interpretation of the data). Take Alabama for instance. They're solidly ahead of us in RPI at #14. But they're 12-17 in Q1 games. That's easily the most Q1 games anyone has played but they're 5 games under .500 in those games. For comparison, we're 12-11 in Q1 games (one of only 9 schools with 10+ Q1 wins and a winning Q1 record), won the head to head with Alabama, and are 4-5 vs what RPI says are 3 of the 4 best teams in the country. By any rational measure, we should be ranked higher than Alabama.

If we’d just win the games on our schedule that we could have and should have we’d be on the Top 8 bubble.
AF, AP, 1or 2 FL, C Ark and 1 OM and 1 Ark
hell we probably are ranked in Top 8

agreed. But again its how the SEC is king when it comes to RPI which is why we shouldnt complain. We are benefitting from that same SEC wave as alabama is...

But really what it does is keep the smaller schools from padding their stats and thinking they are on par with the big boys per say. Take dallas dabtist for example. They are 40-12. But they have 20 quad 4 wins. They are rated 23 in RPI, and will likely end up outside of the top 25 when its over.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Fact is, we didn't win those games because we weren't good enough to win those games. Our record is what we deserve, as is everyone else's.

weve lost some we could have won... weve won some we could have lost... all that evens out. If UGA fields a ground ball on sunday they win that series.. but thats never mentioned around here. If Hines doesnt hit the homer against vandy... can go on and on and on

Agreed had things feel perfectly, we might be that high. However, building a schedule with some margin for error would have been smart.

RPI gives you points for schedule but the problem is, you're assigned the conference schedule and you could schedule great thinking top teams are top teams but if those teams have a couple injuries and suck, well, you get taken down too.
And look at softball, we finished 6th in the SEC. A&M 4th. AL finished 9th. AL got a one seed host as the 14 seed while we travel cross country as a 2 seed and A&M got a 16 seed. It's all horseshlitz as Hunter Hines would say on an open mic.

Better than just choosing hosts based on who had the biggest stadiums (even though it benefitted us). Baby steps, man.

We also used to play 6-team regionals too. Those are what spawned the OG Arm Killas, throwing guys like 3 times in a weekend.

Typically if you schedule with RPI in mind or at least challenging yourself, you will be fine. A few years ago Arizona ended up being around .500. Worse than we thought but no gonna kill the RPI. Scheduling Mt St Mary’s, Alcorn AND North Alabama on the other hand, you know what you are signing up for.

But at the end of the day we are likely headed for a road regional bc we lost 5 home games against teams we should always beat. And we just needed 2-3 of them.

I absolutely agree with this.
Some on here think thoughthat they should just hand us a Host spot.
I’d love to get it and be grateful for it, I just don’t know that we’re really deserving bc we couldn’t win those winnable games. And I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t get a host spot even if we sweep MO.

The SEC benefits greatly from the RPI system. Regardless of who we get or dont get.. its easily the toughest conference in baseball so we get the RPI boost that other schools and conferences have to go schedule outside of conference to get.

All we have to worry about is scheduling teams that dont hurt our RPI. Seems like an easy task... but we botched that royally this year.

Agreed.

I mean yes, Fla, Ark, OM were painful... but we beat Vandy on a 2 out 2 strike homer. Auburn had us down to our last out before we eventually won. And Georiga fields a ground ball they likely win as well..... People dont remember the wins as much as they do the losses...

easy to say if we won those 3 we are national seed. But what if the UGA, Vandy, and Auburn games dont turn out in our favor. We are now 13-15 in conference with zero shot of hosting and hoping to get an at large bid with an RPI in the 30s.

End of day, it all evens out... and as mentioned above... you are what your record says you are.

Really going to need NC State to lose the next two, Ok State to get swept by Houston and obviously we can’t drop even one now.
Still think we need at least 1 and maybe 2 wins in Hoover as well.
