Air raid doesn't work in the SEC not enough speed on team
A running qb with a accurate arm, it doesn't have to be strong, and hit the recivers
In stride

F the air raid. It's an outdated system. Would much rather see Kentucky start going for mobile QB's and run a spread-option offense, like you see out of Oregon.

Love the TO......fun to watch the deception on every play.

South Carolina Gamecocks were just run into the ground by a 1AA triple option team.....The Citadel. Highlights below.

Yep. All the academies and military schools run it because it lets them compete with smaller offensive lines and control the clock. Those guys can't recruit real college linemen due to physical fitness standards. Sounds like a system a University with poor instate recruiting grounds that consistently finishes the recruiting season 13-14 in their conference should look into. Not that I know a program that fits that criteria. But that's none of my business :sunglasses:

After the success of Mumme and Spurrier, the SEC adjusted. Insane athleticism at the DL and deep roster of athletic, physical DB's shuts this style down. They jam the WR's at the line, then can cover for the few seconds it takes for the freak of nature DL to sack the QB. Theres a reason Spurrier could never replicate his offensive success when he returned to CFB.

The spread option works. Gives you the same air raid principles, but slows the pass rush buying the QB more time. Plus gives you an edge in the running game. Problem is getting the ever coveted dual threat QB.

I like the spread option, also. With UK, I think finding the QBs who maybe aren't 4- and 5-star kids but have the mental capacity to really run the thing is key. Randall Cobb comes to mind. Manziel, too. Develop really good college QBs without an eye on the prototypical pro prospect.

I'm so tired of the vanilla running attack we've run for a few years now. Would LOVE some TO concepts incorporated into the ball handling, blocking, misdirection, etc. I don't think we'll ever have enough top flight OL to just line up and push the better SEC teams around. We've got to confuse/trick them in some way to create creases.

Add some sophistication in the running game and combine that with a West Coast/Air Raid short, quick passing game and I think you'd have something that would be hard to defend. Vanilla running concepts combined with slow developing passing game is a recipe for ineptitude.

While there is an original Leach/Mumme Air Raid playbook, Air Raid is really best described as a decidedly unbalanced, pass biased offensive philosophy; a philosophy to throw the ball on any down anywhere on the field. Throwing the ball from the spread sets does not constitute Air Raid...how many times you throw it is what makes it Air Raid. I would say throwing it 60% of the time would constitute an "unbalanced, pass biased offensive philosophy". To that point only 1 team in FBS throws it more than 60% of the time. That is Mike Leach's WSU team that throws it 74% of th time. The next highest volume passing game is IL at 58%. There are only 16 teams that throw it 55% of the time. While Air Raid has been grounded certain patterns (Mesh, Y Sail, etc.) have been incorporated in just about everyone's offense.
