Rupp Arena: can we tear it down already?

Can we tear down this place and get a new arena ASAP?

Is there a worse home arena/environment for a major basketball powerhouse than Rupp Arena? I honestly don't think so. We don't practice there, visiting teams routinely come in and play out of their minds while our fans sit on their hands, and it's not like it's some historic landmark worth preserving. I'm over it. The money this program brings in? The team deserves much better.

Yall can be mad at the OP all you want. But he speaks the truth. It's the quietest gym in America. Time to ge the old farts out and more students in. Fans at Alabama were louder.

Why do people think that building a new arena would actually fix it? If they wanted to fix it they could fix it in Rupp, but the University panders to those that help make this program great with financial support.

Rupp is a big game arena. Always has been.

Our crowds for these games are much better than what you get in Chapel Hill, Louisville, Syracuse, Tucson, etc etc.

We could go back to Memorial if you want a Cameron Crazy atmosphere......

This thread is just freaking stupid.

Rupp can be as good as it gets when the Cats are on a roll, but when things aren't going 100% their way the crowd in Rupp can be pretty freaking bad. Make fun of people all you want but if the Cats aren't rolling, Rupp brings absolutely ZERO home-court advantage. It may piss people off but it's simply the truth. The crowd at Rupp, especially the lower level folks, just don't bring it like the equivalents at most all other big-time programs. I'm not saying we should scrap Rupp, but I wish we could find a way to create the home-court advantage the best team in college bball SHOULD have.

The only chance for Rupp to rock the rest of this season is vs Arkansas.

And chances of that happening are low. Rupp is only truly "magical" when Louisville or another top 5-10 team comes to town.

Oh yay, this again.

Rupp rises when it needs to. I've been to some games there that have been so loud you felt the ground shaking. But, it's a given the home fans aren't going to get rowdy in a game where our much better team farts around and beats some scrub in a game we're favored by 20+

I don't know if that would change with a new structure.

I like Rupp. I wouldn't mind a new arena. But, a new one isn't worth the money it would cost to build it considering the state ranks so low in a lot of categories like education and unemployment.

Hate on the blue hairs all you want but they're the reason we can afford a coach like Cal and keep him at 7 million a year.... Not the students.

That's such a silly argument. Please go watch some Bama games, that don't involve UK, and the tell me how loud they get. We've lost 4 home games in the past 5.5 years, I'd say that's pretty good.

Seriously? I think the OP has had one too many post. I'm sure building a new facility will make all the difference in the world, NOT! It will have the same fans in it. Maybe you can go and show them how to yell.

I absolutely agree with the part in bold. Maybe it doesn't come through on TV, but I never heard any music tonight. Crowd seemed to be quiet when Vandy was shooting fts. No point in having 24000 there if they don't make some noise.

But 96-4.

There is a misconception that the lower arena has really old people sitting there. That is not the way it is. Most of the older fans that moved from Memorial, to Rupp, are no longer there. They have passed those seats on to relatives, or the Blue-White fund has resold them, and I would be willing to wager that the average age of the lower arena is between 40-50. That is not student age, but it is not old as most would like to say. For those who want to turn the lower arena over to the students, get them to pick up all of their allotment, and maybe that argument might mean more. As it has been said, over and over, when there is a big game, or when it is a critical point in the game, Rupp is loud. When the Cats begin 1-10 to start the 2nd half, the crowd is not going to be on its feet, making lots of noise, students or otherwise. Most of these arguments are made by people who never attend a game. When they criticize the crowd participation, they do not realize that the cameras are on the side of the "old farts" as some call them, and that the view they are seeing is that of 3 sections of students, and 3 sections of season ticket holders.

^^ this. What a stupid thing to say. The fans at Alabama were louder? "It's the quietest gym in America."

Calm down everybody, I'm sure they'll serve ice cream at the new arena too.

Look, I'm not denying that Rupp can provide a great big game atmosphere a handful of times a year, but it's simply not consistently as beneficial to our teams as a home court advantage as they deserve, certainly not when compared to other home crowd environments that the other major D1 basketball schools enjoy. It's just not. I don't feel any real nostalgia when I go there, the sight lines are not good in way too many areas, and a lot of factors explain the dead crowds -- some of which can be blamed on the arena set up itself and location. I'm over it.

I wonder how the game will go if we meet Vandy in the SEC tournament in their backyard. I'm guessing they won't get within 20.

Which of those that are better seat 24,000? Or even close?

Yeah, I didn't want to get started on the music, that's another rant altogether hah.

And we could play our home games in the parking lot at Porcini's and still win 90% of our games with the talent we've had here since Cal came along. I still think Rupp Arena isn't nearly as positive a factor for our team as it should be.

Okay, fine, then tell us which games Rupp "not being enough of an advantage" has cost us.

Same place I always sit, right in my daddy's lap.

But seriously, take an arena like Bankers Life in Indy. Not a bad seat in the house. Can't come close to saying that for Rupp.

I'll have to double check my math on this, but it looks like 4.

As I said earlier, we'd win 90% of the games under Cal regardless of where we play when you're bringing the talent he has here. That doesn't mean there aren't legitimate criticisms of Rupp Arena worth discussing, or that because since we win a ton of games there that it has suddenly become some nostalgic, historic landmark like Allen Fieldhouse, which it will never be. UK can do better.

Yet another dumbass thread about Rupp from someone that doesn't spend one dime to go cheer the Wildcats on...Ignore has yet another.
