I am worried about your quickness at guard compared to our guys
Not just compared to your guys buddy. Compared to anyone, track teams included. That is called 🦵 speed.

That's a joke around here. More seriously, I appreciate the time you took to lay out your thoughts

RU is composed of some tough sumofbitches.
When I hear "Rutgers", I think of Rutger Hauer, who starred in The Hitcher. That movie scared me almost as much as Mads Mikkelsen in Valhalla Rising, but not quite. Advantage: NU.

Underrated Mikkelsen movie that is terrifying (but he's not the terrifying one): The Hunt. Check it out.

I don't remember him being in that one. Bug loved the flick.
I realize now there was a more recent movie called The Hunt, which might be the one you're thinking of. This one is a foreign film from from about 10 years ago in which a kindergarten teacher (Mikkelsen) is accused of something horrible.

You're right, I looked it up.

I have not watched it, but will for sure. It's by Thomas Vinterberg, who also directed Mikkelsen in Another Round and is a director I admire. His move The Celebration, from the 90's, is an all time favorite for me.

All great movies, though I haven't seen The Celebration probably since it was new. Bringing this all back to basketball, hopefully our HUNT for an NCAA berth will result in a CELEBRATION in which we buy ANOTHER ROUND of beers to celebrate.

Serious question....

Is Matt Nicholson the fastest "big man" in Northwestern history?
Maybe Robbie Beran, but he's not really a big...

Shon Morris vs Nicholson?
Kevin Rankin?
Alex Olah?
Esch?
Nance?
Young?

The Nicholbomb would dust those guys far worse than what he did to Trayce Jackson-Davis at the end of the first half...

Jokes aside, why wouldn't you have brought up Pardon in that list of yours? He was the best center in NU history (yes, including Esch).

Well, Esch did play in the NBA.

If we're talking about "fastest" big men, though, I would think Pardon would have to get the nod receiving a full-court pass to beat Michigan in probably his most famous play (probably the play that put NU in the Dance).

I feel like before Pardon, NU hardly ever dunked. Now it seems like everyone on the team can dunk it.

Terry Buford, Lucis Reese and Phil Styles dunked during my college years but each did it like 3 times a season.

EDIT. Now that I reflect on this statement, it was probably less than that. I don't remember Brian Schwabe ever dunking and he was 6'9". Brian Pitts dunked once in a while but he didn't play much.

A dunk by Patrick Baldwin (his only one at WRA, as far as I remember) is one of my favorite memories of my years. Back then even Rankin didn't dunk much. I can recall Lucius Reese and Walker Lambiotte dunking maybe once, but guys just didn't get up at NU. It seemed like Pardon was the first guy who dunked a lot, which is a LONG time after Lucius Reese!

Not about Rutgers or even NU, but I recommend watching PSU and Jalen Pickett. Dude is playing at All American level. Not All B1G level, All American.

I'm old enough to remember when it was actually illegal to dunk a basketball in a college game. The rule only lasted a couple years if memory serves me right (early 70s, I think)

Dunking was banned in college for 10 years beginning with th 67-68 season. It was aimed at Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor) and UCLA which was in the middle of the greatest era of dominance in the history of college basketball

Will put a more detailed post up in a bit, but yes, the Nicholbomb is the most accomplished dunker since Pardon, and has a very good chance of surpassing his best single season by the end of this year.

During the prohibition era, crowds loved a dunk to cap off a big victory. It was special then.

I was going to mention him a couple of weeks ago after seeing him play. He is a big guard, who backs down his defender. I am not sure how he is allowed to bang his way in but the refs allow it. I remember Charles Oakley found a way to defend Shaq.As Shaq backed in, Oakley gave a little resistance then went to all fours and Shaq fell over him like a felled tree.

I would hate to see Audige get in foul trouble guarding him. Beran's length might help when his primary move is *** first pressure. He will present a problem for our smaller guards

Kid is kind of shirt and not particularly fast. But he’s strong and surely knows how to play an efficient brand of bully ball. At least for now I’d put him up there with Edey as the best players in the B1G.

And IU is a mess. A complete dumpster fire of a mess. At every level. Wow. 💩

If this is true, it's perplexing. I don't care what conference a kid plays. If you put up 19 a game, you can play.
Unless you are Ryan Taylor, who put up 21.3 at Evansville but <10 at NU.....

It's not a blanket statement...

Taylor was, for sure, disappointing. The approx. 10 a game were not a big issue to me, but rather that his FG% was in the mid 30's doing it. Still, IMO, it does not mean he could not play at a P5 level. Just that probably he could not be a great player at a P5 level.

The article seems to imply Spencer had RU interested, and the rest were mid majors. Kind of matches the info that he had planned visits only to Rutgers and Loyola Chicago. Though I also read him saying the phone was blowing up when he entered the portal.

There were no "P5" portal-offers outside of Pikiell.

There was hope he'd "help" fill SOME of the lost points from Baker and Harper Jr. leaving.. but if anyone inside the program thought he'd be anything like this - they never gave a hint of it preseason.

Starting on Day 1 he stood-out in games against the bottom-majors we played early - but had real trouble in the first several games against better teams (Miami, Temple, etc). Then, from late-December, with everyone back healthy and time to play together - it's has all seemed to click- and playing on a much-improved level.

This is 100% Steve Pikiell seeing something (almost) no one else saw.

Good luck the rest of the way (except March 5).....
