He was a big factor last night. He plays very good defense and had 4 assists with 0 turnovers. The bench was a huge difference in the game last night led by Young, Gaines and Greer.
Agreed! He's had some really nice minutes this year and has been a really nice light during a very blah season. He was a big factor last night. He plays very good defense and had 4 assists with 0 turnovers. The bench was a huge difference in the game last night led by Young, Gaines and Greer.
When Young, Gaines, and Greer are on the court, good things seem to happen. I think the contributions of Gaines are greatly underappreciated because they don't always show up in the stats.
Let's not get carried away here. I agree with the above posters. Greer is adding a lot with his play off the bench, but question: how many starting point guards in the BIG are not scoring threats?: Answer: NoneGreer should have been running the point the entire season. Solid and secure with the ball and good defender.
Greer is our best point guard at the moment, Buie is really a 2. Buie is a shoot-first guy, which doesn't work well when you're the point guard. Who's taking the shots for us this year? No surprise Audige and Buie. I was surprised to see that Buie, even with all his 0-fer games from 3-point land, is still shooting better than Kopp for the season from three, 35.8% vs 34.4%. Buie takes the second most shots on the team, but is only the fourth leading scorer. Greer is 8-16 from three for the season, a healthy 50% clip.He was a big factor last night. He plays very good defense and had 4 assists with 0 turnovers. The bench was a huge difference in the game last night led by Young, Gaines and Greer.

In recent games, Greer has been an effective scorer. He's a pass-first guy, but if teams leave him open, he has been scoring. The McIntosh floater is new to his arsenal this year and he's getting good at it.Let's not get carried away here. I agree with the above posters. Greer is adding a lot with his play off the bench, but question: how many starting point guards in the BIG are not scoring threats?: Answer: None
Greer also signed an autograph for my two sons after a game last year and was really cool about it, asking them questions etc. Seems like a good guy.
I used to ask the kids for their autographs if they asked for mine. The kids would get such a kick out of me wanting their autographs, and it was cute to watch them print out their names.
The data are pretty clear: we should be running plays to set up Young and Greer for 3's. Just kidding, of course. On a serious note though, I would like to see Gaines out there a few more minutes each game (especially given how much Kopp has been struggling). Gaines always gives good effort defensively and rebounds well, and he really is not a bad 3-point shooter; he is selective with his 3's, which is good.Greer is our best point guard at the moment, Buie is really a 2. That is particularly cool because the kids probably had to wait in a long line to get your autograph.

OK, true story. We went to the gator bowl in 2013. Glades, another poster from the board and I stayed in the same motel. In the morning before the game, I went outside the motel and was waiting for the other two to show up and go to breakfast.A couple of Mississippi State fans, looked like a husband and wife in their 50s, started chatting with me and asking if I knew Gladeskat.I said that he would actually be here in a couple of minutes if they wanted to meet him. So they stuck around to meet Glades and have their photo taken with him. It was probably the highlight of their bowl game experience
Are you sure they weren't Auburn fans at the 2010 Outback Bowl?
Now see... that was a nice joke. You're a good man. I was going to ask Gladeskat if he really meant kids with an "s".That is particularly cool because the kids probably had to wait in a long line to get your autograph.
And then very quickly they stopped asking for yoursI used to ask the kids for their autographs if they asked for mine. The kids would get such a kick out of me wanting their autographs, and it was cute to watch them print out their names.
You know what also happens when Greer plays more? We get absolutely roasted on defense. In 10 of the last 12 games we've played, the defense is significantly worse with him on the court than off, the only exceptions being the 2nd Wisconsin game where he was playing during the long stretch where they didn't score and the Purdue game when he didn't play.Should Ryan Greer play more? Absolutely!
Should he start at point guard? Highly Likely.
Since mid-January specifically in the Iowa game, Ryan Greer became a new man, much more aggressive. I took the time to normalize everybody's performances since then, based on their stats per minute and projected a typical game for each guy if Collins gave him 24 minutes. Here are the results...
Greer 7.7 pts, 3.0 of 4.5 shots, 3.2 apg, 3.0 rpg, 1.0 tov, 67%
Buie 9.9 pts, 3.3 of 8.8 shots, 2.6 apg, 1.8 rpg, 2.3 tov, 38%
Kopp 6.5 pts, 2.2 of 6.7 shots, 0.6 apg, 2.0 rpg, 1.6 tov, 33%
Audige 9.3 pts, 3.7 of 9.1 shots, 1.5 apg, 2.4 rpg, 2.3 tov, 41%
Gaines 4.3 pts, 1.4 of 3.5 shots, 0.9 apg, 4.8 rpg, 0.6 tov, 39%
Berry 6.1 pts, 2.0 of 5.9 shots, 1.0 apg, 1.6 rpg, 1.0 tov, 33%
People like to say Greer isn't an offensive threat, but thats not based on much.
He's just a controlled, efficient player, not a gunner. He's also our best ball handler. 3-1 assists to turnovers.
Since mid-January his court time has been more productive than everybody other than Young and Nance.
A couple other things... sports-reference gives him the highest offensive rating on the team, by a decent margin. They give him the 3rd highest "WinShare" on the team, behind Young and Nance.
Thats for the entire Big Ten season.
In conference games where Greer has played more than 10 minute, we are 4-6. When Collins doesn't play him 10 minutes, we are 1-6. That one win without Greer was over the decimated Minnesota team.

With Greer playing roughly 10mpg, we have allowed 214 points in 177 possessions (1.21), when he is sitting, we have allowed 649 points in 648 possessions (1.00). That's the difference between being an average defense and being the worst in the country. No one comes close on the team, the 2nd worst player is Beran at 1.07 on and 1.02 off.
I notice a difference when Greer is in there! Strong dude who doesn't make mistakes and gets a lot of rebounds!Should Ryan Greer play more? Absolutely!

This brings to mind a story about Joe Ruklick, who was an NU basketball standout when I was a kid. I lived within walking distance of Dyche Stadium and environs and loved to catch the College All-Stars practicing and cadge their autographs. Ruklick was a counselor for a boys’ camp on the grounds (about 1958) and he happily obliged me (even though I got stiffed by Ray Nitchske and Alex Karras). Fast forward to 2012, the 50th anniversary of Wilt’s 100-point game. The stories included the fact that Ruklick got the assist on the historic basket. I clipped it and mailed it to Ruklick (who at the time lived right near the stadium). He promptly replied and included an autographed photo of his 1962 Philadelphia Warriors team. It’s gratifying to know that your boyhood heroes are also great people.I used to ask the kids for their autographs if they asked for mine. The kids would get such a kick out of me wanting their autographs, and it was cute to watch them print out their names.
My source is the boxscore that tells you who is on the court and how many points are scored. When Greer is on the court, other teams score a lot more points against us than when he is on the bench. When I looked into +/- numbers, it seemed like Ken Pomeroy abandoned the +/- numbers for players because he determined they were meaningless. It all depends on who else is on the court.
There is just no way in the world that Greer is as bad on defense as Boo Buie is. As much as I appreciate useful statistics, I'd have to know more about your numbers to buy in to your theory. Whats your source?
Yes, has time for anyone that asks.Greer also signed an autograph for my two sons after a game last year and was really cool about it, asking them questions etc. Seems like a good guy.

Totally disagree. Greer is a solid defender. Boo is a swinging door.
Greer should be running the offense. He’s a good ball handler and a pass first guy which is what a point guard is supposed to be. He’ll get his points if he plays more, most importantly he’ll settle the team down, limit turnovers and get the ball to the right players at the right time.
I'm sorry, you disagree with the facts of how many points have been scored with Greer on the court vs off? A novel approach, but sure, go ahead.Totally disagree. Greer is a solid defender. Boo is a swinging door.

Box scores are posted after every game on NUsports. Here's MD.Post your source! Why not share this information? I'd like to look at it and see if I agree with your assessment. Otherwise you're just a guy claiming the election was stolen.
Yeah, you're just trolling now. Bye.Post your source! Why not share this information? I'd like to look at it and see if I agree with your assessment. Otherwise you're just a guy claiming the election was stolen.
Yeah, you're just trolling now. Bye.
Yes, and has for years.Trolling? I don't "troll." I'm just trying to get up to speed. I have never found a source for play by play that includes the substitutions. mekcat, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. This is great!
But I don't see any summary of how many points were scored and allowed by the team when each guy was on the court. Am I to believe that CappyNU has done the work to come up with his own +/- stats for each NU player?
