I just want to point out that clearly Pope is trying to build an elite defense for next year. Of all the guys we have targeted or reached out to at SG Griffin is the best defender. A lineup of Lowe, Griffin, Oweh, Diobate & Quaintance has the ability to be the best defense in the country. Yes, there are other options that shoot a couple percentage points better from 3….and others who can make plays more consistently. But this is the best defender. Defense is 50% of the game of basketball but offense gets all the attention.

I agree. That is definitely Popes strategy.
Whether it bears fruit remains to be seen.
I like good depth as well, just wondering if he is taking it a few guys too far for the sake of filtering an elite guy? Hard to find minutes for 13.
My guess he runs a 10 man rotation, 11th spot will get run when someone from the 10 man rotation is out. The other spots will be reserved/development pieces.

I’ve long advocated for the longer bench, because it allows you to play all out every moment. Foul trouble doesn’t hurt you as much and it allows you to really blow teams out. Those Pitino teams in the 90s were very, very deep and relentless. By the times one wave of guys sits down, some more talented players step in fresh and keep the onslaught going.

Playing more guys also gives you a better opportunity to retain a few, as some guys are inevitably going to hop into the transfer portal.

It remains to be seen whether it will pay off, like you said, but I’m excited about the idea of it.

MD just had 12 total 3's all season.
OK, but he only played 16 mpg. He is not being brought here as a 3 point shooter. He is being brought here as a lock down defender, rebounder, and open court player. But he has shown he can knock down the 3 if open. True he only made 12, but he only shot 26. He is really good at everything, not great at 1 thing. Maybe that will help you a bit, but I doubt it, your mind is made up by staring at his points per game and # of 3s stats.

I really hope Pope doesn’t see roster building in terms of roles. We need well rounded basketball players. Everyone needs to defend, most guys need to be able to pass, and everyone should be able to shoot a little bit.
We run a system. If you are running a system, you look for players to make the machine work. So yes, he will be procuring talent to fill roles.

That doesn’t mean Pope is intentionally going to try to find guys who don’t have more in the bag—-it just means you will have to find guys who excel in certain attributes to make the offense airtight.

Do you build a bicycle out of wheels, or do you have handlebars, a chain, brakes, a seat, pedals, etc.? That’s the idea behind the system —- every role is a part on the bike. Doesn’t mean your handlebars can’t also have a built-in LED screen. Maybe the seat has a bottle holder, etc.

I changed my mind, he is an elite rebounder. Averaged 6 per game in 16 minutes.

His per 40 minutes stats : (Dioubate's)
18 ppg / 15 rpg / 3 apg / 2.4 steals and 1.7 blocks. 15 rebounds per game is Oscar production territory. I would say those stats are pretty damn good, but what do I know.

This isn’t true. It seems to be the fashionable statement but pope nearly landed his top target for the 2g. There are a lot of players available now that werent in the portal last week. If we have to start chandler we’re gonna drop early games. Man I’m glad pope is the coach because he knows the value of a one seed. 80% of the time a 1 seed wins it all.
Agree with you. For me, it would be hard to stomach seeing Chandler start. Not that I don't think he is a good player, but I believe he is still a year away from becoming a potential starting piece. It's now obvious that we need another guard now that Pope is really interested in about four of them at the moment. By far Ian Jackson, Haggerty and Sarr, who is likely a first round pick in the draft, are my top choices. We are also in talks with Zrno, too.

I’m starting to come around on this and get a little excited. Talked to a KU dude I know and he said they are pissed he left KU.

He said they used him all wrong and thought next season he could be great for them

The KU games I watched he was absolutely awful. Missed many open looks from 3, turned the ball over numerous times, and nothing special defensively. Pass
That’s what I’m saying. I do think Kansas was dysfunctional and that offense wasn’t made for him but we have two years of data for him and he was never what I’d consider a star. Solid role player is what he may be but he has to be way better than last year. Two years of data and it’s 50/50 whether he is a good player or not. I’d rather not have to rehabilitate or hope he turns out good. We are worried about shooting and if he is his Kansas version he fixes nothing.

If we don’t get Jackson which isn’t likely I’d love to go all out for Haggerty or Sarr. Those two elevate the team, it also hedges against Oweh in the draft. I’d bet 99% he returns but we never know for sure.

I wish you were subscribed to HOB. There are some charts being shared over there that I really wish you could see. I’ll say Griffen isn’t the sexy name but he could be absolutely a weapon. It’s a way bigger potential add than I thought at first. Has to do with his efficiency in certain things related to specific things we do a lot in our offense.

That’s good to hear. If it was last year, I’d be all over it. His Kansas year gives me pause though. I’m mainly looking at it from the lens of who is available still as well. Potential adds that are much greater. I’m not the coach or have the money though as well.

Some tend to forget we have some pretty good shooters on the team and coming in.

Dioubate shot 46% from 3 at Bama this past season.

Williams shot 41% from 3 this last year as a Freshman.

Oweh shot a respectable 36% from 3 since coming here.

Chandler shot 35% as a Freshman. He ended the season shooting 54% (7-13) in the 5 SEC and NCAA tournament games combined.

Johnson shot 36% from 3 this last season at OTE.

Jelavic is being touted as a shooter. He shot 32% from 3. I think he will shoot better once he becomes part of a system and shoots less shots. His efficiency will improve.

Lowe shot 36% from 3 as a Freshman, on a better team than he played on this past year. I think his efficiency will improve.

Garrison shoots it well for a big man. 30% from 3 from your 5 spot isn’t bad.

Perry and Noah are both snipers, they just need some seasoning.

That’s 10 with respectable numbers. 8 of which will be in the normal rotation.

I think one more good shooter can do the trick.

We may not have a dead eye sniper like Brea, but should have enough shooters to spread the floor and get good looks.

I’d rather have 3 or 4 good shooters on the floor than to have one great one. One good defender can take away one great shooter. It takes a whole team of good defenders to beat a team with a bunch of good shooters.
Not at all…. Let’s be real, none of those listed are reliable on prime time , when they become the main focus of opposing defenses like Breah or Jr were.

We still need 2 shooters from 3 to replace Brea and Jr.

If you don’t have those type of guys the % of everyone you listed goes down.

It’s obvious that Pope and staff thinks that we need shooters since that has been their focus lately.

So no buddy, we don’t forget , we just keep it real.

I’ve been on record, and caught some crap for saying, that Kansas is running 1988 basketball. It wasn’t built for Griffen.

Hey Kansas gave us basketball and Rupp , so we are not going to say something bad if this kid turns out to be a great player for us , if transfers here. ✌️
I respect basketball history so even though I hate KU, I do respect them. They gave all the bluebloods their start for the most part.

But they keep running two paint bigs and are bringing back a dunker spot paint big again…hard to win games on post ups

Wait, you are the guy that criticized Pope because we weren’t getting superstars in the first week of the portal being open.

Never mind.

Haggerty is NOT coming to UK, he is just like Wilkerson, he doesn't want to be "just another player" he wants to be THE player.

Sarr is VERY unlikely also. NBA 1st round or Illinois is my prediction. I would say 80% he goes to Illinois, 20% NBA.

Might as well quit dreaming for these 2. Focus on Watkins and a couple other more attainable players.

Jeff Goodman said it.
Yeap and Athlon sports has an article about it, quoting Goodman. Several guys will draw $2.5-3 million, hell JT Toppin got $4 million, it's not unbelievable. Price you have to pay if you want the Top Tier players. Especially when everyone is trying to sign players before profit sharing / salary cap comes into play.

I could give the same type of reply : You are the guy that thinks that bucs rule anything or you are the guy that thinks we don’t need 3 points shooter……Nevermind.

But since is Good Friday, I would say pax vobiscum my brother and be well.

9.4 PER at Kansas this year. Lol.

But don't question it. Just accept it and move on.

No clue how close we are to grabbing this guy, but it’s crazy to me to doubt it. He got up shots at Bama and delivered at a high clip.

He’ll feel like he’s been released from purgatory if he plays for us. Tyler Childers has nothing on him.
