Any places like this around Louisville or general vicinity? TIA

I'm sure the places John noted are the same, but Bud's in Lexington allows you as many guns as you want to try within the time limit. Just have to pay the upfront fee and the ammo.

Just bought a Beretta PX 4 Storm 40 S&W in the used section at Cabellas and I absolutely love it. First 40 I have owned and its a sharp weapon. 2 inch barrel is handy for concealed carry, and it has some nice stopping power.

I have a couple of Beretta Storms, sub compact 9mm and full sized 45. Both are great shooting guns.

Have played around trying to find the perfect concealed carry gun and haven't been able to find one I like better than the Glock 43. I added a 2 round magazine extension to make the gun an 8+1 capacity. It fits great when concealed, and feels good for a smaller single stack gun.

If concealed carry isn't a worry, I think everyone should have a Glock 17. Holds 18 9mm rounds with the factory magazine and is about as indestructible of a gun that's made. Like others have said, can get 30 round mags for it if Armageddon happens.

I've had an M&P Sheild, and they aren't a bad gun at all. I just have always preferred my Glocks and Berettas when it comes to handguns.

California sucks.

This is my setup with , the viridian is a very nice attachment . The pulsing light is devastating to an intruders vision , the green laser is wildly effective .

That is exactly the one I got the other day, without the laser thing. Love it so far.

I have been down this road before...
I like the S&W Shield... I like S&W firearms...
I own a Glock 17 for home and a Walther PPS M1 for carry...
Me and most that have shot the PPS shoot it better than the Shield... Both are very similar in size and think the same in capacity when you buy...
The PPS M2 (modification #2) is as (more) ergonomic than the Shield...
Would not talk you out of a Shield but will only say that for me weight matters as does the ease of which a pistol can conceal...
My PPS is as heavy as I'd want and if I had a do-over would check out the Glock43 and see how it shot... Ultimately you'll appreciate firearms that operate the same and have choices across the line... Glock and S&W do that as do others.... But none do it quite like Glock... That's why they are popular...
Took me a while to come to that... My ultimate lineup would be...
Glock 42, 43, 26, 19. (9mm is just too cheap for all it does)
Do not forget about .45 cal for protection... If all else fails you could throw one of those bullets at someone and hurt them:) And they shoot good.

I have a big metal fist that I wear on the end of my fist. After I punch you in the face a derringer pops out and sets you on fire. I love that thing.

^Id be careful with the incendiary metal fist....it's on recall. Too many pretentious hipsters were using them to light their hand-rolled cigarillos. It's a shame they recalled them too....there are waaay too many hipsters out there. They, along with their funny little hate, need some thinning out.

The main difference between the shield and a Glock in terms of functionality will be the available thumb safety for the S&W. If that's something you think you need, the glock doesn't have one (though you can get a Saf T Blok or something if that matters.)

I have a Glock 26 and a S&W bodyguard. I prefer the Glock (and 9mm), but sometimes it's easier to carry the smaller .380 depending on what I'm wearing. I like the shield, and they're substantially cheaper than a new Glock, as well. So that's another consideration. My glock 26 has been a tank...never has issues of any kind.

Anyone have any experience with Walther's PPK? Looking for a .380 and something smaller (plus that Bond factor).

One of my carries is a S&W 638. My wife got it for me for my birthday a number of hrs ago. It's actually a dream. And given that it's single/double and wicked light, I find myself carrying it more and more often. I have a 10"+ handspan and can shoot it very well. Not to mention that it's small enough for me to palm without exposing any part of it. I can put it the pocket of most pairs of pants I own....a piece of construction paper to disguise the outline.

I purchased a S&W 638 almost 2 years ago for my CC & I love it as well. Had bought a Springfield XDM sub-compact 9MM when I first got my CC license here in FL and it was just too bulky for me to carry comfortably. That is something I had not really thought thru, figured I could make do with any kind of sub-compact handgun. Not the case. But, the SW 638 is perfect for the exact reason you stated--I can put it in my front pocket. With my business I wear khakis every day with my shirt tucked in and I could not even come close to concealing the XDM 9mm comfortably.

I have to admit, as much as I love the 638 I have been thinking about the Ruger .380 for an even smaller & more comfortable CC option. My dad has one and it def takes a little practice before you get the hang of shooting it, but with the laser sight and small lightweight frame I am tempted.

To pile on...

I bought my wife the S&W Bodyguard for carry, as I have the Shield and the 4" M&P .40 I obviously am a fan, as I am of the Glock 23 I bought years ago.

For a summer carry with shorts and such or for dressed with khakis and tucked shirt as described above I love my Sig Saur P238 .380 caliber. You can get a holster "sleeve" that makes it disappear in front pocket.

Great little pistol for those looking for such a weapon.

That is good to know. I appreciate the recommendation. I will check out the Sig P238.

Great gun and known quality. Sigs are awesome guns.

I have always heard they are very reliable guns. They are def sharp looking as well. For a slightly bigger frame than the ruger .380 they are really a good option for me.

Might also look at the Sig P938 - its only a bit larger than the 238 (which some people say is better - makes it a bit easier to shoot with not much compromise in concealibility), and shoots 9mm vs 380. Like all Sigs, it is a bit pricey, but they are exceptionally well made guns. Both of those are nice if you like having the option of an exposed hammer vs striker fired. Had money been no object, it would have been my choice over the Shield.

Knob Creek down off Dixie Highway has a pretty large rental collection. $10 a day to shoot, plus ammo and rental. Outdoor range, and it can get crowded.

Open Range in Crestwood is my favorite - newer range, all indoor, and they do have rentals. May want to call and see if they have a Shield in the rental pool tho.

Not sure about TG&G over off Newburg Rd - I would assume they do the same thing, but have never shot there.
Thanks Johns...good info

Still haven't gotten anything....think I'm throwing this into the mix--->Sig p250 9mm
Hoping Open Range has this as well as the S&W Shield, Glock 26, and Springfield to try out

Don't forget to try the Glock19, and Glock43.

Remember with Glocks, there really is no maintenance necessary, and the Glock factory is BY FAR number 1 in customer satisfaction. Any issues with the gun are handled immediately (S&W has horrible customer service, as does Sig) and they will replace half of the gun for you, due to rounds, for free. I can't understand why someone would look away form Glock.

It's also the most reliable, sustainable, and easiest to learn. The safety features are excellent if you have kids around. They also make, from the factory, 32 round magazines that are awesome. Nothing like going out to shoot and loading 32 rounds in a semi-auto handgun. It's a blast.

If you shoot a Glock well, buy it. You will not regret it. There's a reason so many other companies are trying desperately to copy the style.

Just wanted to state it again. My family is in law enforcement, and I've owned guns my entire life. I know my way around them. Glock is the best. They may not be as pretty as some guns, but the intent behind the Glock was durability, functionality, and safety. Looks had nothing to do with the design. Don't let the designs of guns factor in to your decision, especially if you're only going to have one gun. (although the streamline style of a Glock is beautiful to many gun owners. I love it)

I am a Glock fanboi:pimp:

You sound like my son! :)

Thanks for the advice.....you make a compelling case as did he....guess I should go ahead and pull the trigger ;-)

Was wanting the 26 for CC purposes....looked quite a bit smaller than the others, no?

The smallest Glocks are the 42 .380 single stack and the Glock43 9mm single stack.

the Glock 19 (most popular Glock by far) is a sub compact 9mm. Great for CC.

The 26 is also great for CC.

I'm big on the 32 round mags so I mainly use my 9mm Glock19, as the single stacks obviously won't hold them. But all of those guns are great for conceal carry. I'd go with whichever you feel comfortable with and feels the best.

You've got a smart kid. Listen to him. ;)

The Glock 26 is weird to me. It is fat and stubby. I don't understand what it is supposed to do better than the 19.

I want to shoot a 42/43 and try them out, though.

Try a talon grip on the 26 and you might love it. Sometimes that's all it takes. They are bulky though.

If getting a 42/43, order the magazine pinkie grip extention. They are awesome too.

Nothing beats the Glock19 though. Best gun in the market.

I have talon grips on my Springfield. Got them because Hickok45 is always suggesting them. They're great. They really help with grip, particularly when sweaty.....extremely easy to install too. I wouldn't call them bulky though. It's just a layer of grip tape.

Oh, and for those that don't recognize the name, Hickok45, he's a guy on YouTube who companies use to review guns. His reviews are usually extremely good.

Hickok45 is awesome. He's actually a teacher I think, and his videos got so big that companies indeed pay him to use their guns and ammo in videos. How f'in cool would that be?

Even crazier is Buds Guns actually auctions weapons he uses for those companies in videos. They bring a slight premium due to him just using the gun in the video. Pretty cool for him to turn a hobby into a semi-famous venture and shoot all the free rounds he wants.

I have the glock 26, and it's so close in size to the 19 that I'd probably just recommend that. With a magazine extension, the 26 is just the 19 with a slightly shorter barrel. Without the extension, it's shorter grip. But they fit the same CC holsters, and are the same width, etc. The 19 is better if you also plan to shoot at the range recreationally with any regularity.

Again, I love my 26, but I have other handguns for the range, so it's no big deal to me. But in my opinion, if you're just buying 1 Glock, the Glock 19 is the way to go. Best of all worlds....great capacity, concealable, fits the hand well, easy to shoot, 9mm rounds are pretty standard and cheap. Unless you're dead-set on a thumb safety, it's a great all around handgun. Granted, it's pricier than the M&P series, which is comparable in a lot of ways. The G23 is good too, if you prefer .40S&W

I usually don't care much for the sub compact guns, but I have to say that the Springfield XD Mod 2 is one of the best feeling pistols that I've shot. Something to look into.
