I only lived in Lexington for a year and I went to a few UK games and courted the prettiest Eastern Kentucky girl and she is with me to this day, so there's lots to bind me to UK. But the thing that brings me back to Lexington in a heartbeat is hearing Paradise and some other John Prine songs. I can't describe the sadness and sense of loss I feel as I type these words. Don't know what else to say.

Edit April 7: so sad to hear that John Prine passed away today.

John Prine is one of the all time greatest American song writers.

In 1994, I drove John Prine from Ashland, Ky to Huntington, WV to catch a plane. It was the morning after he gave a concert in Ashland and he didn’t want to get back on his tour bus for a long drive somewhere down South. I met him backstage after the concert and volunteered.

The next morning I picked him up at the hotel. He had one of the ugliest suit cases ever — an orange metal Samsonite thing. He had a hangover and asked me to stop at a convenience store. He bought a Yoo-hoo, a pack of white powdered donuts and some Tylenol.

We didn’t talk much on the drive because he felt too bad. He signed a couple CDs for me before he left. I kept the Yoo Hoo bottle for years until it got lost in a move.

True story.

I'm sure hoping he can tough it out, odds certainly aren't great for him with age and previous health issues, he is a great songwriter, been a fan since the mid 70's.

Praying for you John. You’re one of the greatest to ever pick and grin my friend. Me and you have been down a many of a back road together, killing time in the woods on the four wheeler and I’ve spent a thousand hours by a big fire, playing my guitar and singing your songs all night. It never fails if you start singing one of his songs, the whole crowd will sing every word with you! That’s special. Best of luck buddy.

This stuff is hitting all around now. It's like living in a different era. But our community is so much larger now, communication being what it is.

Love this guy's music. Sat nearly at his feet in a bar before I was old enough to be there. My first live show. 40 yrs later, I paid to sit about 8 rows back at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Both nights I hung on every raspy word. Praying for you John.

When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Airdrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

It used to be a big deal when I was at UK whenever JP would be at Breedings. Remains one of my favorites. In fact, I'm about to jump inthe shower and belt out a tribute concert...

Dear Abby, dear Abby
My feet are too long
My hair's falling out and my rights are all wrong
My friends they all tell me that I've no friends at all
Won't you write me a letter, won't you give me a call
Signed bewildered

Bewildered, bewildered
You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain't what you ain't
So listen up buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood

While this is absolutely horrible news...it should be noted that he had lung cancer some years back and had a lung removed....heavy underlying medical conditions

It killed me when I saw it the other day. One of my favorites of all time. A bluegrass poet.
