I think this is a big concern. I know we’re going after the Alabama transfer, but who knows if that will pan out.

I can’t seem to wrap my head around why Noa Paola-gates hasn’t put it together. With his girlfriend leaving (Akana), and his decision to stay, he must be in the mix.

I believe we need a true safety that’s bigger and a sure tackler. Not hybrid corners that Wisconsin’s running back will flatline in a one-on-one situation.

What are y’all’s thoughts on this?

GBR.

My guess as of today is Gates is a #3 or 4 in the safety rotation. This is certainly not a position of strength.

Gates needs lots of creatine and Vitamin S.

I wonder if Gifford can cover well enough that is a sure tackler to moonlight at safety and someone like Tyreke or Gates with better cover skills and speed to try Nickle.

If I was guessing, the game one starters will be Buford and Farmer. But I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see someone pass up Farmer.

I agree with that. I just really hope the team is emphasizing tackling technique. It’s one of those things that you can drill a lot, but also players either have it or not.

You also need guys who aren't afraid of doing it. Farmer vs that RB from wisky....no bueno. Dismuke and Williams at least wanted to tackle.

Deshon Singleton is the biggest wild card at safety. With Bretz having some injury stuff, and Javin Wright status more up in the air, it feels thin back there. An immediate impact transfer would be nice- hopefully Kaine Williams could be that guy.

In Fischer we trust. Things don't look good on paper at safety, but I trust coach Fischer to have a Big Ten level defense year in and out.

Now we need a/multiple safeties??

Mother of god, is there a single position group that after 4+ years of recruiting and “development” isn’t in complete shambles?

Stop with the “we”, you aren’t fooling anyone.

I wonder if they might slide Brown to Safety if he is one of the top 4 DB's. We have a lot of talent vying for CB, I think it makes sense to slide someone over to safety.

Fisher likes cross training guys, so it’s certainly possible. I worry it may be too late for Brown to make a move like that by fall.

My gut says Fisher will roll with Buford, Farmer, Singleton, Gifford, NPG with the pecking order still up for grabs a bit.

That is a fair point. I think it's easier to move safeties to corner vs corners to safety from a mental standpoint.

Farmer has good instincts but I worry about his speed. NPG is a little light for the position as others have noted. I think Singleton or Gifford will eventually pass Farmer if they don't add anyone to the room. Safety has to be the 2nd biggest question mark after the interior DL's. I wonder if Hausmann figures into the depth chart as a backup.

100%. Dismuke and Williams were true hard hitters that had that intangible mindset.

Not sure who we have now in the secondary that does have “it.”

If we are considering moving someone to Safety then why not the guy who was projected by Rivals as the #1 overall Safety in his class?

I was a little surprised as well when he said coaches wanted him at CB. I think Fish likes taller guys on the boundary. I'd rather have kids more twitchy at that spot.

Yes! From what I’ve seen from Frost so far, I’m not convinced he actually sees the best fit for players and of course they will play where told usually.

We literally haven’t seen Tyreke, a former 5-star safety play any meaningful snaps since his arrival… I’ve watched the HOL DB group interview and he seems hungry and focused to say the least (more mature than the starters).

I know I’m not at practice but there’s not an excuse to give some players a real look in game action that’s totally different than practice.

Hell, I’m pissed Mauga-Clements is in his final year because I focus on linebackers and effort late in games and especially the kickoff team and he’s really really good too. Just watch any plays his small amount of tape.

GBR.

A player I really wish we could have kept is Isaiah Stalbird.
He was developing nicely and went to SDSU for more playing time. At a quick glance he seems to be doing well putting up better numbers than Marquel Dismuke for example last year.

If we can’t get NPG on the field after 4 years or whatever, then it would be a miss to not have put Stalbird on scholly. Even if Stalbird did not start for us, he would have become a dependable backup in my opinion.

Unfortunately we can't give our defensive backups any playing time because even against crappy teams, games end up a dogfight. I trust Mauga-Clements if he's in, I've been impressed with him. I don't know anything about Tyreke, I have no idea if he's good or not.

This is very close to Lamar Jackson as well. He had exact same Rivals ranking as Tyreke (#1 safety, #14 nationally).
Jackson switched to CB, and frankly he was underwhelming in his early career. He played better at the end, but nothing spectacular. He was just a good frame/athlete.
Hopefully Tyreke can tap into something and carve out a role.
If our other guys are outplaying the #1 overall HS safety, it’s also not the worst problem to have.

I just don't understand how so many 4 star players over the years either quit football or never played a meaningful snap here.

Could be confirmation bias as I really have only focused on Nebraskas recruiting classes since 2003.

Unless the talent evaluation is really that bad, it’s a miraculous statistic.

I mean we went 3-9… let someone else get into a rhythm and at least some meaningful snaps to get adjusted and they may sink, swim, or flourish in a REAL game not practice superstars that break under pressure and crowds. That’s how you find out, kinda like MMA. There’s so many gym warriors and collapse under the lights.
