Salem at GW

I can see either team winning this game really. The GW running game definitely poses a threat to the Salem defense. With Cabell being a dual threat qb that worries me with the Spartan defense. It’ll be cold for sure. I don’t think the cold will have much of a factor on the run game. It could with the passing game as I know the cold can make the ball a little more difficult to catch at times. If the Salem defense can watch the film from the Handley game and see how the Judges exposed them and work really hard to get that fixed I think they can keep them in the game. If not, Salem will need to jump on them quick and not fall behind early. It’s better for this Salem team to take the lead first and be in a shootout that way then falling behind quick and having to fight back being a step behind. Personally, I don’t think the Salem defense will do well with the GW offense early on and going into the half. If the GW line starts to get worn out in the second half I could see the Salem defense having success. I do think the GW defense can handle the Salem running game. However, if the GW defensive front gets tired in the second half like the Handley defensive front did, Salem could very well take over in the second half and salt it away. I look for the Eagles to do their homework and see the success Handley had on the ground last night and try to come up with a similar game plan. I wish just as much success for the Salem football team as much as every other Salem fan does on this board. However, as much as I want to give this team credit when they do well I think there is also times to be critical with ones sports teams. I think GW pulls this one out, 38-34. Last night worried me a lot and just doesn’t have me feeling good about this game. Like I said I love this football team as much as the others do, I just call things like I see it. I just want to give my honest opinion and I hope that it’s respected on this board. Love you all. I hope you all don’t feel like I’m trying to sell these boys short it’s just how I see things at this point in the season.

I’m wondering what day the game is. I’ve seen a source that says Saturday and one that says Friday so I’m really not sure

@MrSalem1000, haven’t been to a Danville home game in a long time but I’ve drove by to see the progress when I come home. I know they’ve done a lot of renovations but there used to be parking behind the visitor bleachers. They’ve constructed a brand new parking lot on the opposite side of the new gym they’re building. GW has a very very nice athletic facility and plenty of parking.

Also, @Chuck Vipperman (GW) can we please make sure we have a comfortable spot for our brother @mike salem if he’s making the trip down. Hope he gets to make the trip, should be a heck of a football game this year.

My buddy and I are planning to make the trip.
Mike @BoKnowsSports already gave @Chuck Vipperman (GW) a heads up. Given all the construction and such hopefully he can give you some local knowledge or help in navigating as J.T. Christopher used to have accessibility challenges and I am not sure on the present set up given the aforementioned construction. Safe travels and good luck to both teams for a well played and entertaining game.

Will GW finally break thru?
Cold wet Forcast. How will that effect game?
Can Salem defense keep Salem in the game?
Can GW handle Salem power running game?
Salem's offense will be under pressure to score on every possession. Don't see that happening. Salem's defense may get one or two stops. If they can manage to get four or five stops, they have a chance.
GW has been wanting to knock off Salem for last several years. I believe this will be their best chance to make it happen.

Several years for sure. Maybe even a decade +!

I predicted 2 months ago that Salem would go 8-2 and win their first playoff game and then lose the second playoff game. I am hoping that I am wrong and everyone can come on here and criticize my prediction . Salems offense will give them a chance to win the game, but eventually you have to make some stops. This game, by far, is GW's best chance to beat Salem.

Nothing like yet another week of hand wringing and Chicken Little-ing from grown men whose best days are so far behind them even home movies wouldn't jog their memories. What a fanbase.

No hand wringing going on. Making honest observations. I thought thats what this board was all about. Somehow that seems to bother you. Strange.
As to our best days being behind us ( maybe your comment was directed to just me) I guess you would have to define best days. I had a great day yesterday and plan on having another tomorrow.

You speak in expressions that I’m too stupid to really understand what you’re even saying. Could you put your seemingly insulting opinion in more clear terms for my pea, CTE ridden brain?

Apparently the difference in the sky falling for Salem but not GW is 7 points. Who knew? The arbitrary nature of fans continues to amaze.

I'll do my best, but there's barely room in the press box for me and my color guy. Combined, we weigh about 700 pounds. :)

A helpful guide for describing Salem performance:

Terrible - 5 wins and misses the playoffs

Bad - 7 wins and loses in the first round of the playoffs

Not good - 8 wins and loses in the regional championship

Good - 11 wins and Region Champion

Great - State Champions

I played on one not good, two bad, and one great team by this standard. But I know all four of those teams beat up and pounded opposing teams and were formidable to play. Yeah you’re developing rhetorically sound and defensible categories to analyze Salem football specifically but still, doesn’t feel great to see that is how fans see it. Not just you, seems to be a common occurrence on this board to understand the question: “What does it mean to be a good Salem football team?” Is it over 10 wins? Is it a region championship?

It takes so much to win even 1 football game and Salem puts it together season after season. Hope we as previous players and long time fans don’t forget that.

I didn’t play on this team but 2002 was a good team that fell on some bad luck. And I know they still were the team to beat and smacked people in the mouth.

Sometimes I feel like we lose sight of what it takes to have any winning season, even if that is just 6-4.

No matter what happens this Friday, hope the kids are proud to have Salem on their chest and proud of their season and don’t see too much of this discourse.

I think it’s Friday but Maxpreps says Saturday so I’m not sure. Is there anyone that knows and can confirm?

@CrushBlock, you made some great points; however, its both a curse or a luxury to have a consistent winner.

Dinwiddie hasn't won the multiple State Championships that Salem has, but just like the Spartan faithful the expectation of a 10-0 or 9-1 season is the norm for our/your spoiled fan base.

Our tough ood schedule and several difficult district opponents often leads to a few losses and Navy Nation tends to come unglued. I would much rather prefer to have folks gripe about an 7-3 or 8-2 season than suffer through a losing one. Just a dang good problem to have.

I guess next year one of our fans bases will be looking for answers early. 😂
