I wouldn't say anyone is making excuses for NB concerning this matter. Being critical of Brown due to his play calling, clock Management, team discipline is fair game. Being critical because a player enters the Transfer portal is a bit nit picky considering its a problem that every coach is experiencing.
Keeping a player on a team is no different than keeping an employee in your employ. There are three simple steps to follow in building a company team or a football team, screen properly, train well and support growth. A break down in any of those and the team is broken. The individual doing the recruiting, training and managing always bears the responsibility. Players leaving in the portal is all on the head coach.

Well I guess every team is broken then because its happening everywhere just like people job hop and don't remain with one employer anymore.

There must be official numbers and I would love to see them. My perception is it happens a lot with most teams.

I tried to find an article that broke it down by school. I couldn't find one. Alabama just had 2 guys enter the portal this week. I remember a few weeks ago one of Minnesota's starting O lineman entered the portal. This is a problem every coach is dealing with its not specific to any one school.

It's becoming a RentATeam world

That takes some of the fun out of it for me. It used to be you'd follow guys from the time they entered the program until the time they finished. You'd remember them many years later. They were cemented in your mind as WVU guys.

Now it feels more like the guys aren't WVU guys as much but rather guys in a WVU uniform. They might be gone next year. Other guys in other uniforms this year might be wearing a WVU uniform next year.

We made it to the national title game in 1988-89 but lost and I can still remember lots about lots of those guys (including Major, who just had his number retired). I think I'd prefer that to a bunch of new guys but great players transferring in for 2022 and WVU winning the 2022 national championship.

If you look at what we've lost in the portal versus what we've gained, we are MILES ahead.

We've lost a couple of quality starters in Smith and Miller. Our team and record are probably better, even slightly, if those two return on the defense. But everyone else? Bench players and 3rd stringers at best. Only a couple have even transferred to P5 schools; most have either dropped a level or haven't been picked up by anyone at all.

Get us a good QB in that portal and next season things look at whole lot rosier.

Nonsense.
I have seen numerous employees who believe they can enter a job near the 'top' and rapidly move upward. The selection process was successful in seeing potential in them. No one can absolutely assess the mental makeup of a person you have limited opportunity to really get to know before hiring. Training is what these folks were doing. They either believed they were already beyond the level of the training but still unable to really carry the required load of the job they were hired for. Maybe with more training they reach some (or all) their potential. These folks did not wish to become fully/adequately trained. Manage? How do you suggest one manages an employee who arrives and soon thereafter says I am leaving. I generally would say GOOD RIDDANCE that you go now BEFORE I invest a lot more time, money, effort, etc. So far you have done nothing and are nor much of a loss. I do not follow that you can rationally make aa case that the 'leaders; have failed in these instances. It seems, to me that ALL falls on the shoulders of immature irrational, overly self centered and self assured individual employees.

LSU starting quarterback Max Johnson is in the portal.

Damn it Neal Brown....according to rootie and others, only your team has this issue.

Neal....what influence do you have over LSU to make this happen....LMAO.
