Has no problem recruiting and playing elite freshmen. The point is to load yourself up with as much talent that reasonably fits your coaching philosophy, whether they are freshmen or they are 30 yrs old, and you'll luck into a Kingston Flemings.

What you don't do is prioritize Mo Dioubate (who I like) over a Caleb Wilson.

My rant for today.

How was Mo prioritized over Wilson?
Wilson was recruited during the summer and fall for a potential Nov early period signing
Mo was signed in April.

it was more of a situation where we didnt really fight back when unc couter offered, we decided to kinda let that recruitment ride because we thought we could get a forward in the portal that was just as good

I think Pope's inexperience blew that recruitment.
A considerably larger offer could have made a difference but I thought Wilson was trolling UK at the end.
Wilson's camp probably seen this weird dorky side of Pope before the majority of the UK fanbase.

One day I'm sure we will find out just what the f went on behind the scenes to give seemingly every elite target run the other way. Maybe it's really as simple as the obvious answer that no elite player wants to play for a guy who will give you 25 mins tops.

And you know this how exactly. You or anyone else not directly involved have a CLUE what happened at the end of Wilson's recruitment. If we had ASSUMED we were a lock for Wilson and not gotten another forward and then lost him anyway the usual suspects would be on here screaming WHY DIDNT WE HAVE A BACK UP PLAN.We wanted the kid he decided to go elsewhere it happens every year I have followed UK basketball.

Most definitely he was that’s what makes it even worse we handed him the W. At Rupp.

Regarding the supposed $22M NIL UK spent. Yesterday on FB (yeah, I know, doesn't mean it's true or not), I saw a graphic showing the highest paid NIL college basketball players (highest 10), of which we had 1 (JQ) at $2M. No other Cat $1.8M or greater. I think Wilson was also shown in the 1.9-2.2 range. The by far highest was Dybantsa I think at $4.3M, I'm not sure anyone else was 3.0+. But if this is true, then it's not possible for UK to have spent $22M in NIL, probably in the mid-high teens.

Sampson is a proven coach with a resume to back it up, a fierce winner, and an Alpha Male personality wise…

Pope? No, heck no, and hell to the absolutely not no!

Probably correct but sadly Gonzaga has a relatively small NIL budget and still curb stoped us.🤬

I think there is a lot to the minutes playing time. The "stars want to be on the floor. Pope's subbing has got.to be a major turn off to recruits.

Put your best team on the floor as many minutes as possible.

$1.57 mil

Even if we aren’t paying Towe or Horn we have 14 players. To get to $22 mil you only need to give each one of 14 players $1.57 million to get to $22 million. But of course if Quaintance is really getting two million then the other players don’t even need that much on average to get to $22 million. And if Pope decided to give something to Towe and Horn then it’s even less again.

Not to mention that FB post you saw was almost certainly based entirely on worthless speculation. None of those real numbers are published anywhere. The only thing that has been published that’s not admittedly based on speculation is Jack Pilgrim reporting that Pope actually told him not only that the number was $22 million, but also specifically why the staff originally thought it was a good idea to leak the $22 million number because they thought it would help recruiting.
