Interesting. Don't recall an open NU scrimmage before.

This whole season feels like there's "nothing to lose" for the basketball team. Stakes are so low, any signs of big-time improvement from the young guys is a win going forward.

And, you know, they’re probably just going to dribble around for a half hour or so.

They staged a similar practice before the last OSU home game (ESPN Game Day, monsoons....). Old WR was packed with scarlet and purple, mostly to get out of the rain. I returned to the West Lot only to find my tent collapsed into a tangled mess of metal and canvas.

Planning on being there. Gives me something to do after I arrive 4 hours early to find a parking space. Can’t hang at Mustard’s forever.

There are not that many people here. Also, not a lot of shots being made.

And it ends in a 32-32 tie as the White team's layup at the buzzer rims out.

Sheesh. Good seats available
I don't know what's more depressing tonight... the result of the football game so far or this picture. Yeesh! It really is amazing we're competitive at all in the big two sports given the fact that so few people care about them.

I’m not sure how much we can kill Collins for not getting guys like Max Christie when this is what we show them

Guys, that picture was taken from the side where most of the people were sitting. Not that the crowd was tremendous, but there were quite a few more people there than this picture suggests.

Really liked Boo Buie's quickness and Ryan Young's rebounding. Jared Jones has a Big Ten body as a freshman. Anthony Gaines is going to be a leader on this team; we already know about his defense and toughness, and he seems to be getting more comfortable with taking - and making - his shot when it's there. Turner only flashed once; he was very quiet in this scrimmage. Miller Kopp got his share of shots, but wasn't hitting them the way we'll need him to when the games start to count. Ryan Greer seemed a bit more confident with the ball and a bit less reluctant to shoot than we saw last year. Saw some good athleticism with Pat Spencer, though it's hard to imagine him playing more than spot minutes. Pete Nance wasn't hitting many shots, but he was active on both ends and had a nice block of a driving layup. Robbie Beran, to me, seemed reminiscent of Miller Kopp last year, which is not a bad thing. He'll need to put on some muscle, though. On the whole, I'd say Buie and Young caught my eye the most. The biggest impression I left with was that irrespective of this season's record, there's plenty of reason to invest in watching the growth and evolution of this core as the season goes on. There are better days ahead, guys. Some important groundwork is being laid this season, and (to me, anyway) it doesn't seem entirely unreasonable that one of these days CCC is going to hit on a Christie or a Baldwin type and really accelerate the process. In the meantime, there's plenty worth watching as this team develops over the course of the season.

Although based only on first impression from a scrimmage, Boo and Jared look like they belong in D1 Ball. Hopefully are two pieces to build on. Nance moves well for a big. Did not control the scrimmage, but the talent is there. Will be a long season.. hope they can win the easier non conference games at home to build some confidence.

This angle looks more respectable.

Sorry, but that still looks like the attendance for a high school JV game. It is what it is. Nothing new. Just have to not have such unrealistic expectations for a program that derives such little interest.

The other side of the lower bowl and behind one basket was nearly completely full. That’s is where you had to sit. They steered you there. Just another inside NU hack job.

I thought Nance looked way better. Nance was easily the guy that stuck out for me. Spencer might get laughed at for being the LaCrosse guy, but he wasn’t out of place at all. He will play. Greer seemed more confident but still pulls the ball back out too quickly. Boo made a bomb, but he doesn’t have that pure stroke, he looks like he’ll get better.
Jones is put together, but he floated outside more than I thought he would. He has a decent mid range game. Gaines is the dominant personality on the team. Needs to go to the hole a lot and not fire up long jumpers. Turner deferred the whole game and didn’t do much. Beran will need some time. Young is big! He should be able to get some boards and a few put backs. Kopp shoots a lot and forced it a bit.
The shooting was better than I expected for the team.

Nance looks like he can run the court well. Having height is important but being able to move, run and get to the right places is as critical. Some bigs are always a step behind. Coaching can help the player know where they need to get to. Nance is smooth for his height and looked engaged. The advantage of the small crowd was sitting close enough to see the facial expressions. overall most of the team looked like they were enjoying it. Young foes look like he could be a contributor.. space eater and a rebounder.

Fitz ran off most fans. He whacked fan participation at kenosha, summer scrimmage, practice, spring game. He commercialized access to big donors only. Booted out everyone out of west or east lot unless you give $1000.
Sorry but 70 inch tvs at home become alot better.

The game started at 4:30 Fans entered through the main entrance and were ushered into the south stands. The original photo is misleading as it only shows the north stands

It is difficult to get much information from an intra-squad scrimmage but here are some observations:
1. Nance was more assertive, looked for his shot ,making a few 3s
2 Beran is tall but will need to develop confidence
3. Kopp looks more assertive
4. Greer demonstrated a little bit of offense
5. Buie quick awkward shot
6. Gaines showed a little more offense
7. Young fair mobility
8. Jones looks smaller than advertised but can play
9. Turner invisible
10. Spenser strong and athletic-he will play some

Offense still does not generate good shots with no inside game demonstrated

Overall impression-scoring will be problematic
