Penn State is an extreme team. They are 1st in the country at not turning the ball over, and they are 3rd-worst in the country at forcing turnovers. They are dead last in the country at offensive rebounding and getting to the free throw line. They shoot the 5th most 3-pointers as a % of their total shots of any team in the country, and they have the 10th-best 3-point shooting percentage in the country. Lastly, they are the most experienced team in the country, with four of their five top guys by minutes played being in their 5th year, a 4th-year senior who is nearly 23, and a 5th year bench player who has played for five different universities in his career. They average 15 minutes per game where their tallest player on the court is 6'6". Like I said, extreme.

Penn State wins games when they shoot the lights out. They have seven players who shoot 40% from 3 or better in conference play (small sample size for three of them, but still)., led by Jalen Pickett. He plays 37 minutes per game and has the 2nd-best shooting percentage of anyone in the conference. He's also the best passer in the Big Ten. Seth Lundy was a 44% shooter from 3 before going 0-11 against Rutgers last game. He's probably not going to do that again.

They don't win games when their effective FG% is less than 54% - they haven't beaten a major-conference team this year when that happens. If they shoot less than 50% from 2 or 40% from 3, it's lights out. We need to make sure that we don't get out of position going for steals, or they will eat us alive. Another area where they are susceptible is when teams can get to the free throw line against them. They've only won once when a team has a FTrate of 35% or higher, and that was at home against Nebraska. Likewise, the magic number on D for them seems to be 33.3% from 3 - when they allow P6 teams to shoot better than that, they are 2-10, though those 2 wins came in the last week at Minnesota and OSU.

Hopefully we can rally behind the crowd, get their shooters rattled, drive the lane, and make just enough shots to pull out the senior day victory.

Get to the line.
I haven’t looked but my instinct is that NU’s wins are heavily correlated with NU’s made free throws.

Great stuff, @CappyNU .

Generally speaking, yes. When our FTrate is 25% or higher, we are 9-4 against P6 (plus Liberty), and when it's less, we are 5-5 against P6 competition (though four of those wins were Nebraska, DePaul, Minnesota and Georgetown 🤷‍♂️).

Very challenging game. Penn State is somehow still in the NCAA conversation despite blowing that game against Rutgers so they will come in fired up to try and get a quad one win, Rutgers doubled Pickett with different guys every time he began to dribble into the lane in the second half. They got away with it because Lundy and Funk went cold. Part of that may have been they were not in their ideal shooting spots and had to move their feet.

Lost on 2/5 at Nebraska scoring 63 pts.

Beat Illinois on 2/14 scoring 93 pts.

Cats Magic No. gonna be 70 but its another bad match up for NU given the structure of the defense.

If we defend the perimeter and pound the ball inside we should win this game.

My fear is we get into a 3 point shooting contest with them. That would be a strategic "F."

Didn't know this. Worrisome. Really want this win

Once again, the obligatory fear of the opponent creeps into the analysis. We should expect the guys to figure out a way to get it done.

We do not need to double team down low. Focus on stopping the threes and if we need to double team anyone it should be Pickett.
Go Cats!

They should do what they sometimes did against Iowa. Instead of always double teaming the big man down low, they sometimes double teamed one of the wing players when he drove into the paint. They should double team Pickett when he attempts to penetrate.

This is why I have been concerned with this matchup. Teams shoot well from 3 and we have tended to have problems and they have been best in BIG and shoot a lot of threes.

Hard to change the entire focus of the D for one game.
You think it's hard to just not double? By itself it does not even require practice, it just requires a command. Don't double, stay in your help positions. Done.

Having said this, there is one dude that is hard to deal with 1-1 inside. And he's like 6'2

My math says EFG was 59 for Penn State last night, and they won. They won despite 13 turnovers, a number they really controlled after the half.

NU couldn’t make two-pointers, and, again, didn’t get to the line. Seems like the guys have started to incorporate Boo-style dipsy-doos into their game. Boo, and everyone else, would benefit from drawing contact in the paint.
