Not looking to sully the recently departed, buuuut my take, from like a million miles away, was that it drove him nuts that many of his cast members went on to have careers beyond Saved by the Bell, while he could never move past "Screech". And I think it pissed him off. Who wants to be remembered as Screech into your 20s and 30s? But damn if he wasn't a Screech his whole damn life. He became a punchline, and then a caricature of himself.
