Springers looked good today against a strong North Stafford squad with good size and athletic. For just 1 week of practice, I was impressed! Controlled scrimmage for the first half working on field goals, kicking and series on offense/ defense for both side. In this part HS scored once NS scored 0.
15 minute break
second half was played as if it were a game. Maybe 2 quarters worth of time..
HS won this portion 5 tds - 2tds. They did kick extra points for each. All were good
35-14 Springers. Count the 1st half...
42-14 Springer win.
I think the Springers will be just fine! Run game looks strong, pass game strong. Blocking/ tackling need more work, but all around pretty daggone good!
HS defense.... fast and aggressive...

Could they be as good as the previous 2 seasons? I am sure it is too early to make that statement in definite. But do they have the ingredients to be as good or maybe even stronger? Just curious on your take.

I do believe they have the ingredients to be as good as last year. They are YOUNG! They are Junior heavy. They have good size on both lines (not quite as big as last year). This years team has probably more speed than last year. Experience is all they lack. I would say by the end half of this season.... they may have the experience and confidence to take it all the way. There isn't a clear QB yet!!! We have 2 excellent QB's!!! One is a Junior, the other a Sophomore! HS has 3 very strong RB's. I think our defense might even be a bit better than last year. Clearly faster! The defense is very quick to the ball.
North Stafford is a good team! They will have a fine season.... HS offense had more than they could handle... The NS offense is excellent! They have a really good QB and a huge Oline.

Gate: $6.00
This should be a good contest that should be a good barometer on where both teams are at this time.
There will be a group of us for some dinner before the game 5p. m. at Roma Italian Restaurant on Williamsburg Rd. in Sandston Va. Come on out.
Dinwiddie Proud, Bleeding Navy, Bnape, Danville, Dan! Come on out! It will be a blast!

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I will be unable to attend this scrimmage. If any of you want to send bail money..., wait, wait, that was last week.

Got a little health issue I've got to get cleared up, so better for me to sit this one out. I hope the rest of you will go and enjoy the game, and the friendship of my good buddy Springer76.

Wild horses couldn't keep me away from Bird. Thank you for the prayers. I'll be at Dinwiddie Saturday. Slip on down if you can. JV at 1:30, Varsity at 3:00. Dinwiddie, Lord Botetourt, and Mills Godwin. It will be interesting to watch Noah Overstreet from LB. And to watch new head coach Strine from Godwin operate. Of course, I may have a minor interest in watching Dinwiddie.

Me and my Home boys enjoyed pizza at Roma's tonight! Sorry you guys missed out....
Varsity Benefit game:
HS won it 28-16. It was not an easy win to say the least. HS did play a whole bunch of players, both qbs, rbs, wrs. linemen.... it is a scrimmage after all! Dale has a strong team! Don't under estimate them...!!! They play good "D"! This was a defensive struggle for most of the first half. Both teams move the ball (inconsistently) at times.
HS had moments of looking good, then sloppy, then pretty good again. We now have 2 weeks to practice and work on what's needed and get ready for our opener, "Hermitage"!
Over all, I'm impressed with my Springers and their progress... I am impressed with Thomas Dale and North Stafford as well. These were 2 quality opponents to prepare for game 1!! Good luck every body out there and all of your favorite teams! Let's get this party started!!!!

Like I said, starters went 2 quarters and 2 series of 3rd quarter for TD. It was 16-14 TD at that point. You can spin it to favor you if you like. It was a scrimmage. Lol. TD's first your second.

Not trying to spin anything.
For instance, HS has 2 qbs vieing for the job. They were in and out at different times. 1 in 1st qtr, the other the 2nd. They switched 3rd snd 4th qtrs.
HS's 1st and 2nd strings aren't set in stone yet. There are decisions to be made on those terms (I was told). HS seemed to be doing a lot more substituting than Dale. Very much a scrimmage! Coach J is still trying to figure what works best in many areas with this YOUNG team, on offense and defense.
We will know who our starters when the first game kicks off!
I think Dale is going to have a really good season! They definitely have the goods to get it done!

Wow! Sounds like Dale and HSHS banged heads last night. Sorry I missed it. My designated driver good old DP's oil is running a little low and he was put in dry dock for a few days. Besides, my wife demanded I cut the field before going to our scrimmage on Saturday. I told her this was her first and only time she would be able to interrupt football. She smiled and pointed to the lawn mower. I wasn't allowed to come back inside until dark. I am going to leave the house before she wakes up tomorrow. I have already laid out my cammo and put my vehicle on stealth mode.

Springer and Checkmate I am digging the intensity between you two. Hell, its only a scrimmage, but lets get after it. I expected this to be a tough matchup. Both teams have tons of talent and are primed for another good season. I respect the heck out of Dale, respect the rivalry, but the game (Dinwiddie vs. Dale) is always close, intense, and takes so much out of both teams I dread it. I think this years game could be the best ever.

They truly are no slouch! They are fundamentally sound! Big physical lines on both sides. They can run well, passing game was good too.
They hit hard and very quick to the ball on defense.
I was really impressed with Dale.

My cousin is the Dline coach at TD. He texted me the details last night. Said they ran a scripted offensive set over and over and were very bland on defense as well. Said he was pleased with his A group at Dline. Graduated 3 of the 4 last season. They had a safety and pick 6

They do look like they will be a team to be reckon with! The safety... HS should never have tried to scramble the qb out of the pocket for a pass attempt. TD's defensive front ate him up in the end zone! HS ran the ball effectively most of the time. I would've gone that route to get away from the goal line!
The int. , that particular qb was throwing the ball high and over the receiver's head all night. He threw it right to the defender. Indeed, the TD defense had him running for his life when he threw it too. He should've thrown out of bounds!
I was really impressed wit the TD defense!

2 very good teams no matter how you slice it! Heavy weight match up for both teams. Sounds like they will both be be trying to steak their flag in the ground for best in the area. So many good teams in the Richmond area this year. I think it is slightly weaker 1-3 only bc HSHS, Herm, & Bird are going to be slightly down. But 4-10 is stronger than last years 4-10 I think.

Adding TD, Dinwiddie, Manchester (who maybe the top team) in the next 3 make a tough top 6.

How about Monacan, Varina, Freeman, LD, Atlee, Cosby, JR, Hopewell, Motoaca, Benedictine all batting for a top 10 spot.

That is 16 quality teams I just named in the 804. Others could be added as well.

We just beat hopewell 21-7 at their place. 10 plays on 10 plays off. That was the score 1st team vs first team. MAYBE played one half of football total. First teams, 1 quarter. We dropped a few TD's too. Hopewell's tailback might have had 20 yards or so. Stuffed him pretty good. Chiefs look good just have to take care of the football this year and we will be a very tough out at the very least

Not sure why/how either team thought there were advantages to this scrimmage? Granby definitely couldn't challenge Bird and Bird beats them up 10 out of 10 times. (Edited).

I figured you had just made a bit of a typo. I agree, why Granby?

It is probably a combination of two things. A close relationship between Coach/AD Bedwell and someone at Granby, and the difficulty for one or both in finding a suitable scrimmage.

It's almost got to be for some reason like that because Bird has absolutely no need to find a weak team to help his players build confidence.

It was a good first scrimmage. I think it was like 3 TDs to 0.They are bigger up front, the QB has a year of experience, and a number of good RBs. The defense played well but defending the pass might be a concern. We also scrimmaged Petersburg. Not a full scrimmage but it was 1-0 Bird. Petersburg looked good aggressive hard hitting defense.They should surprise some people this year.

Are we talking about the same Bird I know? LC BIRD? This was their 2 scrimmages, Granby and Petersburg?
