Seems kind of odd that the SEC would hold a championship event in a state with no member schools.
Well, it's 15 min over the South Carolina State line and a great facility with a hotel, 1,2,3 and 5 bedroom cabins, camping spots, restaurants, shops, golf, indoor arenas, outdoor areans,....etc. It has everything you need without having to leave. Not many places like that around. I was talking to a A&M man and he said this was the best place they had been.

Maybe it will become the SEC home for this event like Greenville for SEC WBB.

That would be awesome. It's a great place. I've been to many Equestrian events, Miranda Lambert concert, Friday Night Lights, the Equestrian Olympics and to eat at the restaurants every month or two. Anyone close by should check it out. The local high schools even have their wrestling matches there.

While being champions is nice, it is hard to get too excited about a sport where winners and losers are determined by judges subjective opinions and not by any sort of objective point scoring. This is sort of the equivalent of being figure skating or gymnastic champions.

Time for instant replay? Did the horse touch the bar?

I can see/respect the subjectivity in scoring. Notwithstanding any of that, I imagine that the members of the equestrian team, like those in any sport, spending numerous hours honing their craft. And even though I really have no interst in watching equestrian, I applaud and appreciate that the team represents USC well.

I view equestrian competition very much like I view gymnastics, free style skiing or figure skating, a skilled talent that requires a great deal of time, effort, physical conditioning and discipline. However, I don't really view any of these type activities as a true "sport".

It's a little more complicated than that. It's one thing to compete on your horse but in the SEC competitions for example USC will be riding Auburn or Georgia or A&Ms horses and visi versa and the rider only has 4 min to practice and get use to the horse they are riding. And I'm sure teams send their worst horses to sabotage the other schools

It doesn't quite work that way. The horses are chosen by blind draw. The host school provides all of the horses for a given competition and the riders from both schools pick from the same pool of horses. The Carolina team doesn't get to pick the best horses from their barn and let the visiting team have the bad ones when there is a competition at Carolina. At the SEC championship, UGA was the host team so their horses were used. UGA lost to Texas A&M in the first round. There are only 4 SEC teams with equestrian teams, Carolina, UGA, Texas A&M and Auburn.

I think you meant only four SEC schools which field equestrain teams. But thanks - I was wondering how many members do sponsor equestrian. How many sponsor gymnastics?

Like I said, you don't ride your own horse, you ride another teams horse.

That is correct, four SEC schools. 9 SEC schools have gymnastics teams. There are over 400 schools that have IHSA equestrian teams (not a varsity sport, more of a club sport). Carolina has an IHSA team as well as a varsity team.

Not if your team is the host. When Carolina has a home competition, they ride the horses they ride every day. They don't know which particular horse they will ride since the horses are chosen by blind draw but they ride their barn's horses. No team brings its horses with the team.
