With 16 teams, opening day will now have four games.

Wed. Thur. Fri
9 vs 16 vs 8 vs 1
12 vs 13 vs 5 vs 4
10 vs 15 vs 7 vs 2
11 vs 14 vs 6 vs 3

There are probably at least 3 or 4 teams playing on Wednesday that will be in the NCAA tournament.

So the Wednesday teams most likely include:

South Carolina
LSU

And the Friday teams more than likely will have Auburn and Tennessee in the top four. If those assumptions are correct, there are 12 teams vying to avoid Wednesday. And two of those teams will be safe until Friday.

Our goal is to get into the top four. You could wind up playing Thursday though and still make a run at the final four.

With 16 teams now, it’s even more reason to move the tournament up a day and have the final Saturday

I thought with 16 teams they'd have a regular 4 round, 16 team tourney. But no, they're still protecting the top 4 seeds with the double-byes. Good luck to a lower seed winning 5 days in a row.

After the grueling regular season, I don't think a conference tournament makes much sense. I doubt if it barely affects NCAA seeding. A pre-season conference tournament might be more fun.

I believe the Big Ten and ACC with 18 teams are also using some unusual conference tournament formats. The bottom conference teams won't qualify for the tournament.
