What a half for the Cats! I don't think they can play much better than that.

Spencer is running the show, with 12 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds. Kopp is 4-4 with 3 3s and has 11. They have 16 points in the paint and 15 on fast breaks. The defense has been stifling, contesting every shot with a man-to-man (no zone). They had 11-0 and 9-0 runs and Bradley hasn't scored a FG in 10 minutes.

They put on a freaking clinic. Wow.

I don't really know how good this Bradley team is but this is some of the best def I've seen the 'Cats play in a long time.

Love that we are up 21 at the under 12 timeout in the 2nd half while Nance is having a down game. Shows we have other guys who can step up.

Not a discussion for tonight, but what is going on with Turner? Looks like he’s playing with no confidence this year. I expected him to be a big contributor this season.

I’m more happy about our offense. Spencer is the engine that gets it going, and we’re playing very confidently.

Ironically this is Turner’s best game this year.

Good lord is he having a game right now. He is a damn good passer.

He seems to be using his scoring to open it up for others.

The pace at which he improves is unbelievable. From Italy to the first couple of games to now.

Seems like a very coachable player to go with the athleticism and skill.

I'll be really curious to see how he's shooting from distance in a month.

He's used to winning. All the guys on this year's team (aside from Malnati) have only been on losing NU teams. His presence on this squad can't be overstated.

It would be fun if Young can play at the B1G level. He's the kind of guy who would seem like he's been playing forever.

Liking the Spencer to Young connection.
Yeah for a 5-7 min stretch there we were just isolating that 2 man iso screen roll game with 3 other guys clustered on the back half.

Don’t think that’ll work nearly as well against B1G talent and coaching (they will adjust more quickly to give help from
backside and happily cede 3v2 in that constrained space). Also Young / Spencer might have a tougher time getting shots off near the paint without being blocked. But still, it’s a nice start that can put some pressure on a defense and create opportunities. Those two had a nice connection and Young is a good roller.

Young is not a great athlete by any stretch, but he moves surprisingly well for a guy as thick as he is. He’s also got really nice footwork around the rim. He may have his struggles against really good/athletic bigs, but he is a solid basketball player. At the end of his four years playing here, fans of opposing teams will be saying “It feels like Ryan Young has been playing at Northwestern for ten years”. He’s that kind of a player. I love it.

Soft hands and soft touch. Not common to put the ball above the rim in the way he does with a strong 7 footer bumping into you.

He's still working through the comfort/confident thing. He'll get better.

Young is gonna be a REALLY good player for us. Pleasantly surprised by his footwork, smarts, and finish around the basket. And only a freshman.

Someone last week compared Young to the Loyola Center and that seems like a great comparison. The Loyola kid played fine against top competition. No reason Young shouldn’t be able to have his fair share of good games against the B1G Centers.

Yeah he’ll have his fair share of good games I totally agree. Definitely exceeded my expectations entering the year. I just think he’ll have some games (especially early on ie this year when he’s still early in development) where an athletic B1G center makes him look a bit silly by blocking him 2 or 4 or whatever times and people will be thinking back and overreact too far in the other direction and say “how did we ever think that this guy could be good enough to play against Big Ten competition?” When that happens I think he has the right attitude to just keep plugging away and come back for the next one.

Btw one difference between he and the LA center (if I’m recalling the right one) is that dude can shoot the ball in the flow of play. Based on Ryan’s FT shooting (which has been good up until what was hopefully a blip at the end of the Bradley game) he has potential to develop that midrange and then eventually 3pt shot for a pick and pop, but I’m not sure he’s got the confidence to do it yet outside of say 12 feet. He’s a RS freshman so plenty of room for growth!

I think Ryan took some mid range shots on the Europe trip and looked good.

We're all just sort of accepting that he's doing what he's doing. But he's essentially a freshman. He's averaging about 12 pts and 7 rebounds. He doesn't foul out and plays effective post D (he stays on his feet all game). What he does on D hugely facilitates guys like Nance and Beran being able to cheat a bit, block shots and get rebounds.

He's is so beyond what we had any right to expect.

Similarly, Spencer is scoring double digits and has a 2.5 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. He has a handle that seems to get a bit better each game. He also has an elite gear as he showed on a couple drives last night. A month ago the book on him was that he can play basketball and will definitely get minutes and "help."

What Spencer is doing should be a national story. It's cover of SI stuff....60 Minutes stuff. It is unbelievable.

Personally, I though Collins would start him a couple games and then ease Boo Boo in. That's not what's happening.

Spencer and Ryan combined are averaging 22 - 23 pts a game. Who called that? How ridiculous is their pick and roll five games in. How crazy is Young's post passing.

Ryan is playing so well in the early going that at one point last night I wondered if Benson knew what was coming. I'm not seriously suggesting that, but the thought honestly did occur to me at one point.
