Seeding Question

After seeing this latest joke of an attempt and then listening to Basch and Willie talk with another analytics guy about finding a formula, I couldn't stop wondering why they don't just use trackwrestling's system. I know in MO, all coaches are required to put everything into track. When it comes to districts, Missouri HS Association has a set equation and it's automatically pulled at the seeding meeting in seconds. Whoever has the most points, gets the seed. You can have your own criteria for "challenges" but the automatic system really did a great job and it eliminated 90% of the time taken. Is the seeding for the state series in Iowa ran by a similar system?

I just can't believe that a lot of high school associations already have these systems/formulas in place, it's not like they are going to have to "reinvent the wheel".

Am I the only one that thinks we are overthinking this seeding formula?

Track doesnt have or use their own criteria. They let the users decide what info they want to use, what value they want to assign each criteria, order of criteria, etc.. So its nor really any different than what the b10 used

Except the Big10 formula didn't put enough weight (or any) on the single most important factor in determining who should be a higher seed! H2H wins should never be overlooked when applicable.

In the case of 133, Blaze and Byrd didn't wrestle so I'm fine with going to a H2H vs field factor. In the case of 165 and 174 they end up looking like jack a$$es when Caliendo is higher than Blaze and Minto is higher than Haines and PK.

It doesn't have to be either/or. This should have been figured out before they went live. You're telling me not one person said, "hey, let's do a mock run and see if something is off". Nope, full speed ahead bitches!!!

Thats not what the OP was saying. He is saying that track is better. Its not. It doesnt matter what software program you are using. What matters is what criteria you decide to use, that value you give each criteria. If you had told track to use the same criteria that the b10 app used, you would have gotten the same seeds.

I was agreeing with that premise, while continuing to complain about the Big10 pre-seeds. But yes, GIGO, regardless of the platform.

Can anyone answer what problem this computer algorithm was attempting to solve? Was it just time consuming for the coaches to do the seeding? Not sure what could be more important to their time except maybe ncaa seeding.

Because they had no criteria at all and it was strictly a coaches vote so they decided to have a points system instead.

Even Cael said quite a bit about the flaws in the system. As good as they are, I was wondering if he would say much about it, but he seemed as bothered by it as many here are...

I understand Track lets the tournament organization pick the seeding criteria and thus that organization has to ask for said criteria. What makes me scratch my head is that there are already plenty of "templates" out there. As I said, state associations already have track use their individual formulas. I just can't believe the BIG 10 can't look up a few of them and see which one they want to use. I've ran plenty of tournaments on Track and plenty of seeding meetings, what the heck is so difficult finding a formula...there's already one out there that might only need a little tweaking. Then of course you still have a seeding meeting the night before, like usual, but it should be a lot less time consuming.
