Is that the most humiliating and embarrassing loss you have witnessed as a Penn State fan or alum?

The complete and utter incompetence of James Franklin is STUNNING.

The entire college football community is laughing at Penn State football this morning.

What recruit would want to come play in this clown show?

Down two touchdowns and driving for a score, but instead of using their three timeouts they burn the clock so the other other team doesn't get the ball.....WHAT??? Who does that??

The ONLY explanation is JF is trying to get fired so he can walk into the sunset with the 50 million.

I'm still in shock, I just can't get passed yesterday.....how utterly embarrassing!

I dont think he is trying to get fired, I think they said it on the broadcast...."Franklin cant decide who he has less confidence in, his defense, or offense." And id add one more......himself.
That’s all it is, he’s got no confidence in anything and mostly himself.
One thing with him is he wears his emotions and tells you how he feels. He always fought taking 100% ownership until last week. I thought then and there the results of this season were binary: they’d hit rock bottom, will rally, and go on a nice run playing free and loose. Or they’d collapse.

I believe Oregon was the moment he kind of realized it ain’t happening for him here.

According to 24/7 reporting, there was no energy all week at practice. Maybe the team bought the hype that they only lose to great teams so they didn’t focus as much this week? Wouldn’t be first team to do so. The constant “they only lose to elite” realization made them more likely to lose to non-elite teams so here we are.
If it is a collapse, 4-5 in a few weeks is in play. Heck 3-6 is as well if they play like that.

The 2004 team had no expectation of competing for a national title and Iowa was a team with a pulse. This loss is exponentially worse than that one.
That 2004 team had the best defense in the country and didn’t give up more than 21 in any single game. It’s youngsters would go on to be some of the all time legends that shook the program from the doldrums.
The O was so bad that they lost even scoring 2x themselves.

No argument. And also the reason that team was unburdened by the expectation of being nationally relevant.

I was at the game.

When the opposing team has so little confidence that you will even successfully score a FG that they voluntarily take a safety….it’s embarrassing. They dared the offense to even move past midfield and kick a FG to win 7-6 and the putrid PSU offense couldn’t do it. Embarrassing.

Same.

I’m not trying to be argumentative and I understand what you’re saying- you’re not wrong. But I didn’t see a team all that burdened by any expectations yesterday. I don’t see a coach that feels any pressure, or he’d try the backup qb or just a different play on 4th and 2. I’m not sure they’re even that good. Leadership clearly isn’t good at all.
Sorry, a little vent.

99 Minnesota was pretty embarrassing also. Along with the two subsequent turds the following two weeks after being ranked number 2 most of the season and getting all kinds of hype with LaVar being on the cover of the SI preseason college football edition.

Again, no argument.

Yesterday our national championship contending team was beaten by a winless team that was the worst team in college football statistically. And beaten soundly. There is no precedent for what happened yesterday.

That’s fair. 99 had a ton of hype and they lost to unranked Minny….at home.

The conversation about this year’s team went from “where’s the ceiling?” to “where’s the bottom?” in record time.

6-4 will never be overtaken in the realm of embarrassing losses in my opinion.
But this one is bad.

Have to disagree. 2004 was in the dark era. Expectations were low.

This team was supposed to be a national title contender. This might end up to be the most epic fall in the history of college football. If so, it genuinely started yesterday.

Minnesota had that flukey vibe with the pass deflection falling right to the Minny WR with no time.

And PSU was right there in the Michigan game only to lose late to Tom Brady.

Yesterday they were just flat-out beat from start to finish by an inferior 0-4 team with no coaching staff.

This may be a turning point. Many people I know or follow that were huge JF followers have all said it's time for him to step aside. Haven't seen a ground swell like this before in so many big followers and believers in him are saying it's time for him to go

That game was a freak show. On one play a MN player kicked a pass to another MN guy (or something ridiculous like that.) But yeah, that set the tone for the few remaining games left that year. It was a devastating loss.

It’s just entertainment. Albeit very poor entertainment. If yesterday’s game were a movie, I would have given it 5 crab apples. I’ll give the game yesterday 5 deflated footballs.

This is almost certainly not the biggest epic fail in history.
t’s tied for Franklin’s worst loss as a favorite in Vegas.
It’s still terrible.

I was in the Meadowlands for the PSU-Nebraska game in 1983. Nebraska squashed Penn State 44-6. Of course, NE was ranked #1 going into the season, so while the game was humiliating, it was at least against a team that was damn good. Yesterday's loss to a defeated team looked to me as though most of the team had quit.

I was there. You could hear a pin drop in the stadium. Then I was tortured again in person the following week when they squandered another late lead to Michigan.

Don't forget the 1999 finale against MSU. The first time PSU had lost their final three games since 1941.

Doesn’t matter the context. Both seasons were colossal disappointments. That 99 team had the #1 and #2 overall draft picks on the roster and was a preseason favorite to win it all from several publications. The vaunted defense gave up leads twice to kill that season then slept walked through the last game of the season.

The 01 season opener at home vs Miami had the same vibe. What an azz kicking. I agree with you on yesterday. The team quit on the coaches. I get the feeling there’s some friction within this team that we don’t know about. It’s looked uninspired from the opening kick of the season. There’s more than meets the eye here as to why.

Me, too. I recall a huge painted sign in the north end zone upper deck which read, “Refuse to lose!” Maybe it was “loose”. Regardless, the team didn’t get the message.

Context is important! Minny was a fluke. Michigan was a top 5-10 team that year (I think). MSU won the B1G title under Saban.

Losing 3 in a row with that team sucked. I agree. But that doesn’t compare to yesterday.

Agree to disagree. I think both were really bad. Yesterday was putrid. 1999 PSU was ranked 2 with a lot of publicity and they lost both of those games at home. If your the legit #1 or #2 team in the country, you find a way to win those games.

The collapse in 1999 was very, very bad
I also had higher expectations for that 1999 team
Probably no singular loss is worse than UCLA yesterday--a top 10 team losing to an 0-4 team should never happen even if they're overrated.
But that collapse should have been the end of Joe's regime.

Sorry, not even close. UCLA is effing putrid. One of the worst in P4, and perhaps in all of CFB. The 99 Minny team finished 4th in the BIG and was a bowl team.
