Sorry, not even close. UCLA is effing putrid. One of the worst in P4, and perhaps in all of CFB. The 99 Minny team finished 4th in the BIG and was a bowl team.
It wasn’t just the Minny loss though. It was laying an egg the last three weeks of the season after being a preseason favorite to win it all and being ranked #2 all season.

That 2004 team had the best defense in the country and didn’t give up more than 21 in any single game. It’s youngsters would go on to be some of the all time legends that shook the program from the doldrums.
The O was so bad that they lost even scoring 2x themselves.
That 2004 team was one that didn't quit despite their record. I was at the goal line stand game at Indiana on 11/13/2004 and that team cared and played hard despite being 2-7 at the time and playing on the road in front of a high school game sized crowd. I see no such passion in this year's team.

Loses to Cincinnati in '83 and Toledo in 2000 were bad. That Miami blowout was embarrassing too (although that Caines team was loaded).
1997 Michigan drubbing although Michigan was very good. Even worse, the season ender in East Lansing. PSU was a 1 loss team and they went to East Lansing and got curbstomped by a 7-4 Sparty team that rolled up 596 yards of offense. PSU gave up 452 yards rushing. Sparty had two RBs go over 200 yards in that game. PSU started the season ranked #1 and spent 8 weeks that season ranked either 1 or 2.

Is that the most humiliating and embarrassing loss you have witnessed as a Penn State fan or alum?

The complete and utter incompetence of James Franklin is STUNNING.

The entire college football community is laughing at Penn State football this morning.

What recruit would want to come play in this clown show?

Down two touchdowns and driving for a score, but instead of using their three timeouts they burn the clock so the other other team doesn't get the ball.....WHAT??? Who does that??

The ONLY explanation is JF is trying to get fired so he can walk into the sunset with the 50 million.

I'm still in shock, I just can't get passed yesterday.....how utterly embarrassing!
Yes!

That team did not lay an egg…they lost 3 very tough games to some good teams.

At least that 1983 team was coming off of a NC and had to replace a lot of starters. They also were crushed by Nebraska, which played for the NC, but they recovered and ended by beating Washington in the Aloha Bowl and finished 8-4-1.

That’s all it is, he’s got no confidence in anything and mostly himself.
One thing with him is he wears his emotions and tells you how he feels. He always fought taking 100% ownership until last week. I thought then and there the results of this season were binary: they’d hit rock bottom, will rally, and go on a nice run playing free and loose. Or they’d collapse.

I believe Oregon was the moment he kind of realized it ain’t happening for him here.

According to 24/7 reporting, there was no energy all week at practice. Maybe the team bought the hype that they only lose to great teams so they didn’t focus as much this week? Wouldn’t be first team to do so. The constant “they only lose to elite” realization made them more likely to lose to non-elite teams so here we are.
If it is a collapse, 4-5 in a few weeks is in play. Heck 3-6 is as well if they play like that.
Interesting because BWI guys reported decent energy.
I love all the psychologist here who know what’s going on in Franklins head at specific moments. Good stuff.

I was at that one....

In the endzone it looked as if the sea parted and in the middle was a green man running with giant steps right down the middle of it.....

It was awful.

This may be a turning point. Many people I know or follow that were huge JF followers have all said it's time for him to step aside. Haven't seen a ground swell like this before in so many big followers and believers in him are saying it's time for him to go
It doesn’t matter if it’s his time to go and it very well may be. The buyout makes that prohibitive.

The 01 season opener at home vs Miami had the same vibe. What an azz kicking. I agree with you on yesterday. The team quit on the coaches. I get the feeling there’s some friction within this team that we don’t know about. It’s looked uninspired from the opening kick of the season. There’s more than meets the eye here as to why.
When did the kids quit yesterday? Did just the D quit or did the O quit too?

Didn’t Michigan State just run the ball down our throats that year like maybe 2 RBs near or over 200 yards?

correction, as another poster stated above it was 97, not 99

That’s fair. 99 had a ton of hype and they lost to unranked Minny….at home.
Minnesota was a solid team that finished 18th and Glen Mason was a good coach. And what happened at the end of the Minnesota game was a fluke. We kicked too many field goals but Minnesota got into FG range off of a fluke play. That Minnesota team would boat race ucla yesterday. We were dominated yesterday by a staff that had two days to prepare and a team that was blown out by new Mexico. No comparison.

Call it what you want. It started a three game slide that made what was supposed to be a national championship level season a real clunker.

Preseason and early season rankings are all bs. What we have out “on paper” the first 5 games reveals who we are, a mediocre team with some bizarre coaching decisions.

Yeah, there were no quitters out there that I could see (at least when the f-ing usher would get out of the way). PSU just got out-executed and a number of players, especially Reynolds and the o-line, came up small when we needed them.

They were ranked #2 and lost the the last three games of the year. They laid an egg.
And the '99 team was a much better team that this one. To me, this year and this loss isn't even close to '99. '99 was a disaster - all those NFL players on that roster but we got stuck watching Derek Fox struggle over and over.
