Now I do think there could be positives from it. It certainly gets you out of your comfort zone, and forces you to interact with people you wouldn't normally interact with. As a "country" white dude from KY, I developed friendships with people from all different races, nationalities, and backgrounds.

I gained a lot of insight on how the world operates outside of a county of 20,000 people, where everyone works in the coal mines or becomes a nurse.

I wouldn't mind if everyone had to go through basic training. It would be a short but intense experience that would teach some valuable skills in case they were ever needed, and provide some insight into what our soldiers go through.

i don't think the state should be able to compel service. they don't "own" people. and, as much as i anticipate the "they compel other things...argument" i probably don't agree with that either.

Mandatory military service for anything but military necessity is not a good idea. There are lots of positives to being in the military, but there are lots of positives in a lot of experiences. Mandatory service for politicians is a bad idea as well. I say this as a veteran: some of the pro-military stuff has gone way overboard.

Seriously? I think I already explained this but how could this not be extremely beneficial and give better insight into the military/conflict/war etc? It's sure as hell a lot better than some piece of **** elitist in a rich suit who never did anything at all but then gets to make decisions like he's playing a video game.

...and take orders.

Or are you gonna go full potato and deny that?

I'm simple, not sure what full potato means and don't really care but taking orders is important. You have to have an objective in life and in any endeavor. The military's sole job is to kill people and break things. Mis-guided and bad people have changed the military's mission at times to humanitarian efforts. That is not good. Be Good

Trying to imagine taking some pimple faced, gauge eared, droopy drawers teenager that can't get my order right at a drive thru window and putting them in the Marine Corp. No thanks! Better to stay lean and mean with soldiers that want to be there.
Not saying I want it(I have 4 sons), but for some kids it would be a wake up call about being an American and realizing what these guys go through. I was drafted in 1969 during the Vietnam conflict . We had many like me and many more who were placed there by the courts as an option for their probation. For many I think it would be beneficial as they would learn some discipline and what it means to follow rules , guidelines and just grow up and learn some respect...I know that I was scared to death when I got on that plane to head to a foreign country at 19, but it truly made me realize what a great privilege it is to live in this country even though the ones of us that served were treated like second class citizens when we returned...It has gotten better over time and I'm constantly thanking those in uniform when I run in contact with them and buy them lunch if I see them out eating...We are truly blessed to live in this land. I don't think most kids today understand that fact .

1 + million elite soldiers>> 10 million or so cannon fodder.

And that's not too mention the political ramifications of us having a large active force like that. We catch hell from the world as it is.

The service suggestions where pretty spot on. Shouldn't be mandatory tho.

That's right. Give the government a chance to brainwash/condition/indoctrinate every male in this country. Two thumbs up.
Sounds like you could use a little...If you hate it so bad , why not leave to "someplace better"...What other country do you see the people beating down the doors to come besides AMERICA.

Are you talking about Ronald Reagon and George W Bush?

This is twice I have seen you mention them...Won't they allow you in?:sunglasses:

You need a skill set that New Zealand wants for you to be allowed citizenship.

There's plenty of people at Calais trying to enter Great Britain.
Greece and Italy are being overrun by migrants and they are all moving thru Europe.

You're not married I take it. Completely understand now. Be Good
Happily married. She doesn't order me and I don't order her. I have no authority over her and she has no authority over me. It's amazing what mutual respect and compromise can do.

Heck I'm old fashioned. I thought marriage was about love. (Hint; if you are compromising you are obeying just a little bit too..) sigh. I wish you well...

Reaching mutual decisions and sacrificing when the other party is also sacrificing is not the same as taking orders or giving orders. Sorry. Where did I say anything about my marriage not involving love? Asalaam alikum.

You must not read much news outside of the US politics.
The instability in the Middle East and Africa has caused a huge migration of people to Europe.

As for required service, nope.
Rather have a volunteer army than conscripts that will want to dodge front line service when more wars like Iraq come around.

White noise.

Early 30s, 6ft 185 34/34 about average size I suppose. I used to be in great shape before my two year old was born and had colic.

My son had colic as well and it was no sleep for 6 months. I understand about the white noise as I'm the same way.

My grandson had colic when born about three months ago and just getting straightened out and my son liked to have killed me complaining to his mom to come help. The wife stood it for one night then moved them to our house. Tough stuff...

We went multiple times to the doctor and each time they said it was colic and something that she would grow out of. This went on for over 14 months until we learned that she was having a hard time digesting milk. We switched to soy and things started to get better. Before that it was up at midnight like clockwork and she wouldn't settle until 4 or 5 am. It was beyond terrible and I am thankful that those days are behind us.

Getting back on track, a 2 year military stint would have been more fun.

You mention that and our grandson was constipated severely in his left colon. A little prune juice cleared him up after a day or two. (After a couple doctors claimed it was only colic.) He drinks it regularly now (just a bit a day) but he is feeling a lot better and sleeping....most of the night.

The military is a character builder, confidence booster, and self-esteem generator. Don't knock it. It will make a man out of those who want to be a man.

I am not speaking about anyone. I just believe military experience in general is an advantage and gives more of an understanding than some delusional retard speaking about something he has no idea about.

It would be like us acting like experts and presenting an ideology where have zero experience.

Oh, know I understand. You're talking about many government politicians now....they are experts about everything and have never done much of anything.

Yes. Gives the voting public skin in the game. Should keep politicians from unilaterally going to war.

That being said, might I refer you to what the great Sgt R Lee Ermey said in reference to one of his onscreen cadets: "Private Pyle, don't make any touching effort to make it over that obstacle. If God wanted you up there, he would have miracled your *** up there!"
